Vitamin D is unusual among vitamins: your skin makes it from sunlight, and it is still one of the most common nutritional shortfalls in the world. Indoor work, sunscreen and high latitudes each cut production, and together they cut it a lot.
Start from the guidelines, not from a per-kilogram rule
You will find “40 to 60 IU per kilogram” repeated all over the web as a daily vitamin D requirement. Run it and an ordinary 80 kg adult lands on 4,000 IU a day before any adjustment at all, which is the tolerable upper limit. That figure comes from short-term deficiency correction protocols, not from maintenance, and repeating it as a daily target is how calculators end up recommending doses their own safety table forbids.
This page starts at 1,000 IU a day and adjusts from there, and it will not print a number above 4,000.
Daily IU = 1,000 × Weight Factor × Skin Tone Factor × Latitude Factor × Season Factor
Variable definitions:
- Weight Factor: vitamin D is fat soluble and sequesters in adipose tissue, so a larger body reaches a lower blood level on the same dose. Scaled gently around a 70 kg reference, capped between 0.75 and 1.6.
- Skin Tone Factor: melanin absorbs the UVB that makes vitamin D, so darker skin needs 3 to 5 times the sun exposure for the same synthesis, and correspondingly more from the diet at high latitudes.
- Latitude Factor: above 35°N or below 35°S, UVB is too weak for meaningful synthesis from roughly October through March, whatever the sky looks like. Sources put that cutoff anywhere between 35° and 37°, so treat it as a band rather than a line.
- Season Factor: the same latitude behaves very differently in January and July.
Worked example: Person: 80 kg, dark skin, Boston (42°N), midwinter. 1,000 × 1.08 (weight) × 1.6 (skin) × 1.2 (latitude) × 1.5 (winter) = 3,110, rounded to 3,100 IU/day. Move the same person to June and the season factor drops to 1.0, giving 2,100.

The gap between the RDA of 600 and the Endocrine Society’s 1,500 to 2,000 is real and not an error on anyone’s part. The RDA answers “what prevents bone disease in almost everyone”, and the higher figure answers “what gets a blood level to 30 ng/mL in someone who is short”. Which question applies to you is what the blood test settles.
Blood serum target (25-OH Vitamin D):
- Deficient: < 20 ng/mL
- Insufficient: 20–29 ng/mL
- Optimal: 30–60 ng/mL
- Toxicity risk: > 150 ng/mL
Sunlight production guide: a full-body exposure to one minimum erythemal dose, meaning just short of visible redness, produces roughly 10,000 to 20,000 IU. That is the figure usually quoted, and it is often misread as what a short walk gives you. Five to seven minutes of midday summer sun on fair skin in shorts and a T-shirt is closer to 2,000 IU, because you are exposing about 40% of your skin for about a third of your burn threshold. Ten minutes would be most of the way to pink, and roughly double the vitamin D, which is the part nobody wants to hear. Above 35° latitude in winter the number goes to essentially zero however long you stay out, since the sun never climbs high enough for the relevant UVB to reach the ground.
