How Jewelry Solder Amount Is Calculated

Using the correct amount of solder is critical in jewelry making. Too little creates a weak joint that fails under stress. Too much creates excess that must be filed away, potentially damaging adjacent details or gemstone settings.

Solder Volume Formula

The solder needed depends on the joint gap area and the capillary fill depth:

Solder_Volume_mm³ = Joint_Length × Joint_Width × Gap_Depth

For a butt joint (two flat surfaces meeting):

  • Joint width = the thickness of the metal being joined
  • Gap depth = the capillary gap, typically 0.05-0.15 mm for a good fit

Platinum is the odd one out. It is not sold as easy, medium and hard, it is sold by flow temperature, so a platinum solder is called something like 1500 because that is the degree it runs at. The three grade options above all report the same figure for it rather than pretending otherwise.

The grades matter more than the density does. Density only changes the weight by a few percent across the whole table, while flow temperature is what decides whether your third solder join opens up the first one.

Pallion (Chip) Sizing

Solder is commonly cut into small squares called pallions. A typical pallion is a square cut from sheet solder:

Pallion side length = sqrt(Volume / Sheet_Thickness)

Standard solder sheet is 0.25 mm thick. For a joint needing 1.5 mm³ of solder: Side = sqrt(1.5 / 0.25) = sqrt(6.0) = 2.45 mm square

Worked Example

Silver ring band joint, 2 mm wide metal, 1.5 mm thick, good fit (0.1 mm gap), medium solder:

  • Volume: 2.0 × 1.5 × 0.1 = 0.30 mm³
  • Add 50% excess for capillary flow: 0.30 × 1.5 = 0.45 mm³
  • Weight: 0.45 mm³ × 9.2 g/cm³ = 4.1 mg
  • Pallion size from 0.25 mm sheet: sqrt(0.45 / 0.25) = 1.34 mm square

Four milligrams. That is the whole point of this calculation, and it is far less solder than most people cut. A pallion 1.34 mm on a side is barely visible on the bench, and the instinct to use “a bit more, to be safe” is what produces the fillet you then spend twenty minutes filing off a ring you have already finished polishing.

Tips for Clean Joints

Flux the joint thoroughly before applying solder. The solder will only flow where flux is present and the metal is clean. Use hard solder first if multiple joins are needed, then step down to medium and easy solder for subsequent joins. This prevents earlier joints from re-flowing when you heat the piece again.
