Power of Attorney Cost Estimator
Estimate power of attorney costs for general, durable, medical, and limited POA types.
Includes attorney drafting fees, notarization, and state filing costs.
Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document granting one person (the agent) authority to act on behalf of another (the principal) in financial, medical, or legal matters. Costs vary significantly by complexity and method.
Cost estimation formula:
Total POA Cost = Base Legal Fee + Notarization + State Filing + Optional Services
Reference ranges, for judging a quote rather than standing in as one. Legal fees are set per firm and per state, so this page asks for the figures you have been given instead of guessing them. Leave the price fields blank and it still tells you which document you need and which of these lines will appear on your bill.
| Method | Typical Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Online template service | $35–$150 | Simple situations |
| Legal document service | $150–$300 | More complex needs |
| Estate attorney (simple) | $200–$500 | General durable POA |
| Estate attorney (complex) | $500–$1,500+ | Multiple documents, trust coordination |
| Notarization | $5–$15 per signature | Required in all states, and usually capped by statute |
| State recording fee | $0–$50 | Only where the agent will handle real estate |
Two of those deserve a second look. Notary fees are capped by state law in most of the country, often between $5 and $15 a signature, so a quote well above that is a travel fee for a mobile notary rather than the notarial act itself. And recording only applies to a POA that can touch real estate. A healthcare POA is handed to your doctors and never filed with anyone, so if a quote includes a recording fee for one, ask why.
Types of Power of Attorney:
- General POA: broad financial authority, but it terminates the moment the principal becomes incapacitated. That is usually the opposite of what people want.
- Durable POA: stays in force through incapacity. This is the one most people are actually looking for.
- Springing POA: takes effect only on a specified event, typically a doctor certifying incapacity. Cleaner in theory, slower in practice, since the agent has to prove the trigger happened before a bank will act.
- Medical / Healthcare POA: medical decisions only, and entirely separate from the financial one.
- Limited POA: a single transaction or a fixed window, such as closing on a house while you are abroad.
Worked estimate: A single adult in their 40s having a standard durable financial POA drafted by an estate attorney in a mid-cost state:
- Attorney fee: $350
- Notarization: $25
- County recording, since the agent may deal with property: $20
- Certified copies: $10
- Estimated total: $405
Put those four figures in and the calculator returns $405. What you are buying by going to an attorney rather than a template is someone checking that the powers granted actually match what you want the agent to be able to do, and that the document will survive contact with a bank. That is the part templates get wrong, and it is not visible until the day somebody tries to use it.
Notice how little of that $405 is the lawyer’s judgment and how much is administration: $55 of it is notary, recording and copies, and those cost the same whichever route you take. On a DIY form they can be half the total.
Which one do you actually need? Nine times out of ten the answer is a durable POA, because the situation people are planning for is the one where they cannot make decisions themselves. A plain General POA terminates at exactly that moment. Pair it with a healthcare POA, which is a separate document that is never recorded and is handed to your doctors instead.
Important: POA laws vary by state. A POA valid in one may need changes to be accepted in another, and banks are the most likely to object. Sign in front of the notary rather than beforehand, and give your agent an original rather than a photocopy.
