This converter takes any number and expresses it in English words. It breaks the number into groups of three digits (ones, thousands, millions) and converts each group separately.
How it works: The number is divided into place-value groups. Each group is converted to words using standard English naming: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, millions, and so on. For example, 1,234 becomes “one thousand two hundred thirty-four.”
When to use this converter:
- Writing checks: Banks require the amount written in both numbers and words to prevent fraud.

Tips and common mistakes:
- In English, numbers 13 through 19 have unique names (thirteen, fourteen, etc.) rather than following the pattern of the tens.
- Hyphens are used for numbers 21-99 that are not multiples of ten (twenty-one, sixty-five).
- Scale names go up in thousands: thousand, million, billion, trillion, quadrillion. This converter handles all of them, up to eighteen digits.
- Zero is simply “zero”. Decimal digits are read one at a time after the word “point”, so 3.14 is “three point one four” rather than “three point fourteen”.
- Negative numbers are prefixed with “negative” before the word form of the absolute value.
