Psychological resilience is the capacity to recover from adversity, stress, trauma, or significant challenges. Resilience scoring tools measure protective factors, the internal strengths and external resources that buffer against mental health difficulties when life gets hard.
How the six questions above are scored: Resilience Score = Sum of the six answers ÷ 30 × 100
Every domain counts the same. There is no weighting, because nobody has established that one protective factor deserves more weight than another for an individual, and inventing weights would only make the number look more precise than it is.
Common resilience domains and their measurement:
- Emotional regulation: ability to manage intense feelings without being overwhelmed
- Self-efficacy: belief in your own capacity to cope and succeed
- Optimism: expectation that situations will improve over time
- Social support: quality of close relationships and community connections
- Problem-solving: approach to challenges: active vs. avoidant coping
- Sense of purpose: meaningful goals, values, or spiritual/philosophical framework
- Physical wellness: sleep quality, exercise, nutrition (body affects mind)
Validated scales used in research:
- Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 25): 25 items, scored 0–4 each. Total range: 0–100. Mean score in general population: ~65. Higher = more resilient.
- Brief Resilience Scale (BRS): 6 items scored 1–5. Average = sum ÷ 6. Range 1–5. Mean: ~3.4.
- Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA): 33 items across 6 subscales.
Score interpretation for the CD-RISC 25, which is a different instrument on a different scale, listed here because you will meet these numbers if you read anything about resilience research:
- 80–100: Very high resilience
- 65–79: Above average
- 50–64: Average
- 35–49: Below average
- Below 35: Low resilience; professional support may be beneficial
⚠️ Those are raw CD-RISC points out of 100, not percentages, and they do not transfer to the six-question screener above. A CD-RISC 65 is a mid-range score; 65% here is not. Read the bands below for your own result.
Bands for the six-question screener on this page:
| Raw score | Percentage shown | Band |
|---|---|---|
| 26–30 | 87–100% | High resilience |
| 20–25 | 67–83% | Good resilience |
| 14–19 | 47–63% | Moderate resilience |
| 6–13 | 20–43% | Building resilience |
Only multiples of one thirtieth are reachable, so the percentages jump in steps of about 3.3 and the gaps between the bands above are not scores anyone can actually get.
Note the floor. Answering “Not at all” to all six still gives 6 out of 30, which is 20%, so this scale never reaches zero and a 20% result is the bottom of it rather than a fifth of the way up.
Worked example: Someone answers 5, 4, 4, 5, 4 and 2. The sum is 24. Resilience score = (24 ÷ 30) × 100 = 80%, which lands in the Good band. The 2 is on “I recover from setbacks without getting stuck in negative feelings”, so that domain is what the calculator singles out as the growth opportunity, not the overall number. That is the useful half of the output. A single weak domain pulls a high total down by only a few points while quietly doing most of the damage in real life.
Resilience is trainable: Unlike fixed traits, resilience can be built through therapy (especially CBT and ACT), mindfulness practice, social connection, sleep optimization, and progressive exposure to manageable challenges. A low score is not a ceiling. It is a starting point.
