Cold process soap must cure for a minimum period after unmolding to allow excess water to evaporate and the crystal structure of the soap to fully develop. While saponification (the chemical reaction between oils and lye) is mostly complete within 48 hours, the curing process involves water loss and hardening that takes weeks.
Base Cure Time Formula
Cure Days = Base Days × Oil Factor × Humidity Factor × Thickness Factor
Where:
- Base Days = 28 days (the standard minimum cure for most cold process soaps)
- Oil Factor adjusts for the dominant oil profile in the recipe
- Humidity Factor adjusts for ambient curing conditions
- Thickness Factor adjusts for bar thickness beyond the standard 2.5 cm

Thickness Factor
Standard is a 2.5 cm bar, and anything thicker adds 20% per extra centimetre:

A thinner bar gets no discount, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight. Saponification and crystal development take the time they take regardless of geometry, so a 1.5 cm bar still wants its four weeks even though it dries out faster.
Worked Example
A 100% olive oil Castile soap, cured in a normal humidity room, cut to standard 2.5 cm thickness:
Cure Days = 28 × 2.5 × 1.0 × 1.0 = 70 days (10 weeks)
This matches the well-known recommendation that Castile soaps need 2–3 months of curing.
Weight Loss During Curing
Well-cured soap typically loses 15–25% of its initial weight through water evaporation. Weighing is the only honest test of whether a bar is done, because a calendar cannot know how humid your room actually was.
Weigh one bar the day you cut it, write the number on a label, and weigh the same bar weekly. When the weekly change drops under 1%, curing is essentially complete whatever the schedule said. Enter that fresh-cut weight above and the result works out the target range for you.
A soap that has lost less than 10% after its full scheduled cure is telling you the room is too humid or the airflow is too poor, not that the schedule was wrong. Add a fan and give it another fortnight.
Tips for Optimal Curing
Cure soap on a rack with airflow on all sides. Rotate bars weekly. Avoid direct sunlight which can cause rancidity in unsaturated oil soaps. A fan in the curing room significantly reduces cure time in humid climates. Temperature should be 18–24°C (65–75°F) for best results.
