Reverse Sales Tax Calculator

Calculate pre-tax price and tax amount from any total using a known sales tax rate.
Useful for expense reporting, accounting, and verifying receipts.

Price Breakdown

Reverse sales tax calculation finds the original pre-tax price when you only know the final total you paid. This is useful for reimbursements, accounting entries, price comparisons, and any situation where you need to separate the tax from the total.

Formula: Pre-Tax Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + Tax Rate)

Tax Amount Paid: Tax Paid = Total Price − Pre-Tax Price

Or directly: Tax Paid = Total Price × (Tax Rate ÷ (1 + Tax Rate))

What each variable means:

  • Total Price is the final amount charged including tax, the figure at the bottom of your receipt.
  • Tax Rate is the sales tax as a percentage. Enter 8.5 for 8.5%, not 0.085.
  • Pre-Tax Price is the base price before tax was added.

Why you cannot just subtract the rate: The obvious move is to take 8% off the total. It is wrong, and it is wrong in a predictable direction: too low. Tax was charged on the pre-tax price, not on the total, so the total is 108% of a smaller number rather than 100% of itself. Dividing by 1.08 is the only way back.

On a $54.00 total at 8%, subtracting gives $49.68 and dividing gives $50.00. Thirty-two cents on one receipt, but the error scales, and on a $5,400 equipment purchase it is $32.

Worked example: You paid $54.00 in a city with 8% sales tax.

Pre-Tax Price = $54.00 ÷ 1.08 = $50.00 Tax Paid = $54.00 − $50.00 = $4.00

Check it: $50.00 × 0.08 = $4.00 ✓

State sales tax rates, state portion only:

Band States
None Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, Alaska
Under 5% Colorado 2.9%, Alabama and Georgia and Hawaii and New York and Wyoming 4%
5% to 6.5% Wisconsin 5%, Maine 5.5%, Florida and Texas 6.25%
Over 6.5% California 7.25%, Indiana and Mississippi and Rhode Island and New Jersey 7%

Local taxes then add anywhere from nothing to about 5%. That is why the state league table and the combined one look so different: Georgia charges 4% at state level and lands near 7.4% combined, while Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas all clear 9.4%. Alaska has no state sales tax at all but plenty of boroughs charge their own.

The rate you need is always the combined one for the address where the sale took place, and for a delivery that means the destination, not the seller.
