Wood Lathe Speed Calculator
Calculate optimal lathe RPM for your workpiece diameter.
Get safe and efficient lathe speeds for turning wood bowls, spindles, and blanks.
Lathe speed is chosen to give a sensible peripheral (rim) speed, not a sensible-sounding RPM. A 300 mm bowl and a 25 mm spindle turning at the same RPM have rim speeds twelve times apart, which is why big work has to spin slowly.
Speed formula: RPM (revolutions per minute) = (surface speed in m/min × 1000) / (π × diameter in mm)
Simplified: RPM = 160,000 / diameter (mm) at about 500 m/min. The familiar imperial rule of thumb, diameter in inches × RPM = 6,000 to 9,000, is the same thing said differently: 6,000 works out at 479 m/min and 9,000 at 718 m/min.
Surface speed by operation:
- Roughing an out-of-round blank: 320-480 m/min. This is the band the table below uses.
- General turning, blank already round: 480-720 m/min.
- Finishing and sanding: 360-540 m/min, about a quarter below turning speed. Sanding faster burns the paper and the wood without cutting faster.
Speed ranges by diameter. Both columns come from the surface speeds above, so they cannot drift apart from what the calculator returns.

Look at the bottom two rows and you can see where the arithmetic stops being advice. A 25 mm spindle wants 6,000 RPM and change for general turning, and most bench lathes top out around 3,000 to 4,000. That is fine. Small work is forgiving, and running a thin spindle below its ideal rim speed costs you a slightly rougher cut, nothing more. Enter your lathe’s maximum below and the calculator will tell you when the recommendation is out of reach.
The same is not true at the top of the table. Exceeding the recommended speed on a large blank is how blanks come apart, so the ceiling matters far more than the floor.
Below about 50 mm the rule stops describing what anyone actually does. Extrapolate it to a 20 mm pen blank and it asks for 7,600 RPM, which is not a speed any pen turner runs and not a speed most lathes reach. Pen turning is worked from surface feet per minute instead, in the 350 to 400 range, and that gives about 1,950 RPM on the same blank. Four times apart on identical wood, and both numbers are in print. The difference is that the 6,000-to-9,000 rule was built around bowls and chair legs, where rim speed is the limiting factor, while a pen blank is limited by heat at the tool and by how much a thin blank flexes. Safety rules:
- Always start the lathe at low speed and increase gradually
- Out-of-round or unbalanced blanks must be roughed at the low end of the roughing band, then brought up once they run true
- Never exceed the lathe’s maximum rated RPM
- Always wear a face shield, not just safety glasses
- Stand to the side when starting, not directly in front of the work
- If the lathe starts to walk across the floor, the blank is out of balance and the speed is too high. Stop, do not try to ride it out.
