Understanding Cement Mix Ratios
Concrete is made by mixing cement, sand (fine aggregate), gravel or crushed stone (coarse aggregate), and water in specific proportions. The mix ratio determines the strength, workability, and durability of the finished concrete. Ratios are expressed as Cement : Sand : Gravel by volume. Getting the right ratio is crucial for structural integrity and longevity of any construction project.

Water-to-Cement Ratio:
The amount of water affects both workability and final strength. The general rule is 0.45 to 0.60 parts water per part cement by weight.
Water (liters) = Cement weight (kg) × water-to-cement ratio
- 0.45 ratio: Strong but hard to work with, best for structural elements
- 0.50 ratio: Good balance of strength and workability
- 0.55 ratio: Easier to pour but slightly weaker
- 0.60 ratio: Very workable but reduced strength, avoid for structural use
How Much Material Do You Need?
Here is the part most mix-ratio charts leave out, and it is the difference between ordering enough and coming up short. Dry ingredients do not add up to their own volume once mixed. Sand slots into the spaces between the gravel, cement paste slots into the spaces between the sand grains, and the whole thing packs down. Six cubic feet of loose dry material makes roughly four cubic feet of concrete.
The standard allowance for this is the dry volume factor: multiply the finished concrete volume by 1.54 for concrete mixes containing gravel, or by 1.30 for mortar and screed with no coarse aggregate, then split that larger figure by the ratio parts. The 1.54 covers the packing plus a small margin for damp sand bulking and spillage.
For a 1:2:3 mix, to produce approximately 1 cubic meter (35.3 cubic feet) of concrete, you need 1.54 cubic meters of dry material, which works out to:
- Cement: 0.257 cubic meters, or 9.1 cubic feet. That is 9 bags at 94 lb each in the US, or 386 kg (7.7 bags at 50 kg each)
- Sand: 0.513 cubic meters (18.1 cubic feet), roughly 820 kg
- Gravel: 0.770 cubic meters (27.2 cubic feet), roughly 1155 kg
- Water: about 193 liters (51 gallons) at a 0.50 water-to-cement ratio
In US units that is 41.6 cubic feet of dry material per cubic yard of concrete: about 6.9 bags of cement, 13.9 cubic feet of sand, and 20.8 cubic feet of gravel.
The bag arithmetic works because a 94 lb bag of Portland cement is packed to one cubic foot. That single fact is why the calculator can report cement in bags and everything else in cubic feet without converting anything: for cement the two units are the same number. Sand and gravel weights above assume loose dry material at roughly 1600 and 1500 kg per cubic meter, and both vary with moisture and stone size.
Practical Examples:
- A 4-inch thick sidewalk that is 3 feet wide and 20 feet long needs about 0.74 cubic yards of concrete. Use a 1:2:3 mix for a durable surface.
- Setting a 4x4 fence post requires about 2-3 bags (60-90 lb) of premixed concrete per post hole, using a 1:2:4 equivalent mix.
- A brick wall uses mortar at a 1:3 cement-to-sand ratio. One bag of cement (94 lb, about 1 cubic foot) mixed with 3 cubic feet of sand yields roughly 3 cubic feet of mortar, enough for 110 to 125 standard bricks. The figure worth memorizing is the smaller one: a single cubic foot of mortar lays about 35 to 40 bricks with normal 3/8 inch joints.
Tips:
- Always mix dry ingredients thoroughly before adding water.
- Add water gradually and mix well. You can always add more water, but you cannot remove it.
- Concrete reaches about 70% of its full strength after 7 days and 99% after 28 days.
- In hot weather, concrete sets faster and may need more water. In cold weather, it sets slower and may need protection from freezing.
