Currency Conversion uses approximate fixed rates relative to USD.

This page carries a fixed snapshot of rates, not a live feed. It is a static site with no server behind it, so nothing here can update itself. Treat every figure below as a rough order of magnitude for planning a trip or sanity-checking a price, and pull a live quote before you move real money. Major pairs drift a few percent over a year and considerably more over several.

Approximate rates used (for estimation only):

  • 1 USD = 1.000 USD
  • 1 USD = 0.92 EUR
  • 1 USD = 0.79 GBP
  • 1 USD = 149.50 JPY
  • 1 USD = 83.50 INR
  • 1 USD = 1.53 AUD
  • 1 USD = 1.36 CAD
  • 1 USD = 0.88 CHF

Important disclaimer: These are approximate rates for estimation purposes only. Exchange rates fluctuate constantly. For actual financial transactions, always use a live rate from your bank or a service like XE.com, Google Finance, or your brokerage.

Common uses:

  • Travel budget planning
  • Comparing international prices
  • Quick mental math for online shopping

The figure most people overlook is the gap between the mid-market rate (the one quoted on Google or a finance site) and the rate they actually receive. You almost never get the mid-market rate. Banks, card networks, and exchange kiosks add a margin called the spread on top of any flat fee, and that spread is where the real cost usually hides. Airport counters and “no fee” booths are often the most expensive of all, because they bury a wide spread instead of charging an obvious fee. When you compare options, compare the rate you would actually get against the mid-market rate, not just the advertised fees.

What the spread actually costs you:

Where you exchange Typical spread off mid-market On a 1,000 unit exchange
Specialist transfer service 0.4% to 1% you lose 4 to 10
Debit or credit card abroad, no FX fee 0% to 1% you lose 0 to 10
Card with a foreign transaction fee 2.5% to 3.5% you lose 25 to 35
High street bank counter 3% to 5% you lose 30 to 50
Airport or hotel kiosk 7% to 15% you lose 70 to 150

Spreads move around, so read these as bands rather than quotes. The pattern behind them is stable, though: the more convenient the counter, the wider the spread, and the ones advertising “0% commission” are almost always the worst of the lot because the commission has simply been folded into the rate where you cannot see it.

One more habit worth building. When a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency instead of the local one, decline it. That is dynamic currency conversion, and the machine sets its own rate, typically 3 to 6 percent worse than your card issuer would have given you. Always pay in the local currency.
