Understanding Essential Oil Measurements
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that must be properly diluted before topical application. Accurate measurement is critical for safety and effectiveness. The standard measurement unit for essential oils is drops, but professional aromatherapists and formulators work in milliliters for greater precision. Understanding the relationship between drops, milliliters, and dilution percentages ensures safe and consistent blending.
Drops to Milliliters Conversion:
The number of drops per milliliter varies by the viscosity of the oil and the dropper size, but the widely accepted standard is:
1 mL = approximately 20 drops
1 drop = approximately 0.05 mL
For thicker oils (like vetiver or myrrh), there may be 15-18 drops per mL. For thinner oils (like lemon or eucalyptus), there may be 22-25 drops per mL.

Dilution Percentage Formula:
Drops of essential oil = (desired % × carrier oil in mL × drops per mL) / 100
Rearranged, the percentage is the essential oil measured against the carrier:
Dilution % = (essential oil mL / carrier oil mL) × 100
Which denominator? It matters more than it looks
Two conventions are in circulation. One measures the essential oil against the carrier alone, the other against the finished blend, and they give different answers for the same bottle. This page uses the carrier-based version throughout, because that is what every practical dilution chart in aromatherapy is built on: 12 drops into 1 oz of carrier is published as 2%, and 12 drops is 0.6 mL, which is 2.0% of 30 mL of carrier but only 1.96% of the 30.6 mL that results.
Below about 3% the two barely differ and nobody notices. Higher up they separate fast: 60 drops in 1 oz of carrier is 10% by the carrier rule and 9.09% by the blend rule, which is enough to move a blend from one safety band to the next. If a source quotes a percentage without saying which denominator it used, assume carrier, since that is what the drops-per-ounce tables assume.

Carrier Oil Volumes:
- 1 teaspoon = 5 mL = approximately 100 drops of carrier oil
- 1 tablespoon = 15 mL = approximately 300 drops of carrier oil
- 1 fluid ounce = 30 mL = approximately 600 drops of carrier oil
Practical Examples:
- To make a 2% dilution massage oil: add 12 drops of essential oil to 1 oz (30 mL) of carrier oil such as sweet almond or jojoba.
- A roller bottle (10 mL) at 3% dilution needs 6 drops of essential oil, topped off with carrier oil.
- A 4 oz (120 mL) body lotion at 1% dilution requires 24 drops of essential oil total.
Tips:
- Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before using a new essential oil blend.
- Never apply undiluted essential oils directly to skin except under professional guidance.
- Some essential oils (citrus oils like lemon, bergamot, and grapefruit) are phototoxic and can cause skin burns in sunlight. Use at 0.5-2% maximum for sun-exposed skin.
- Store essential oils in dark glass bottles away from heat and sunlight to preserve potency. Most oils last 1-3 years when properly stored.
