Lamp Shade Dimensions to Bulb Clearance Converter

Lamp shade sizing involves matching the shade dimensions to the lamp base, the bulb type, and the harp or fitter that connects them. Proper sizing ensures the shade looks proportional, provides adequate light distribution, and maintains safe clearance from the heat of the bulb.
The three measurements of a lamp shade:
- Top diameter: The opening at the top of the shade, measured straight across. Common range: 3 to 8 inches (76 to 203 mm) for table lamps.
- Bottom diameter: The widest point at the bottom. Common range: 8 to 20 inches (203 to 508 mm) for table lamps.
- Slant height (or side height): Measured along the slope of the shade from top to bottom rim. Common range: 6 to 14 inches (152 to 356 mm).
Bulb clearance rules: The critical safety measurement is the shortest distance between the bulb and the inside surface of the shade, in whatever direction that happens to be. Minimum clearances depend on the bulb type:
- LED bulbs: Minimum 1/2 inch (13 mm) clearance. LED bulbs produce very little heat and are the safest option for tight shade clearances.
- CFL bulbs: Minimum 1 inch (25 mm) clearance. CFLs produce moderate heat at the base.
- Incandescent bulbs (40W): Minimum 1.5 inches (38 mm) clearance. Traditional bulbs get very hot.
- Incandescent bulbs (60-100W): Minimum 2 inches (51 mm) clearance. High-wattage incandescent bulbs generate significant heat and can scorch or ignite shade materials if too close.
Two different gaps have to clear that figure, and they are set by different things. The sideways gap is decided by the shade itself: take the top opening, subtract the bulb’s width, and halve it. That is the one the calculator above checks, because your three shade measurements are enough to work it out. The vertical gap between the top of the bulb and the top of the shade is set by harp height instead, so if the calculator says you are tight at the top, a taller harp is usually the fix rather than a different shade.
On a tapered shade the sideways gap is tightest at the top opening and generous lower down, which is why a bulb sitting low in a tall harp can clear a shade that a bulb sitting high in the same shade would not.
Harp sizing: The harp is the U-shaped wire frame that holds the shade above the bulb. Harps come in standard heights measured from the base (where it clips into the lamp socket) to the top (where the finial screws on). They are sold in whole inches, normally from 6 to 15, so any recommendation with a decimal in it is not a harp you can buy.
The working rule is simpler than it looks: the harp should stand about an inch shorter than the shade’s height. Get that right and the shade covers the socket, the switch and the top of the harp, which is the whole point of the proportion. Too tall a harp and the hardware peeks out below the rim; too short and the shade swallows the bulb and chokes the light. If you are between two sizes, take the shorter one, because a shade sitting slightly low looks deliberate and a shade sitting high looks like a mistake.
Harp height also decides bulb clearance, since it fixes how far the shade rides above the socket. A taller harp buys you room; that is the lever to reach for when a bulb sits too close to the shade and you do not want to change either.
Fitter types:
- Spider fitter: The most common type. A metal frame inside the shade attaches to the top of the harp with a finial. Standard spider fitters fit harps with 1/2-inch threaded tops.
- Uno fitter: A ring built into the shade that screws directly onto the socket, eliminating the need for a harp. The standard Uno fitter has a 1-7/16 inch (36.5 mm) inner diameter.
- Clip-on fitter: Spring clips that attach directly to the bulb. Used for chandeliers and small accent lamps. Only suitable for small, lightweight shades.
- Chimney fitter: Designed to sit atop a glass chimney, typically on hurricane lamps and oil lamp conversions.
Proportional guidelines for shade sizing: A well-proportioned table lamp shade typically follows these rules:
- The bottom diameter of the shade should be approximately equal to the height of the lamp base (from table to socket).
- The shade should hide the hardware (harp, socket, switch) from view at normal seated eye level.
- The bottom rim of the shade should be at or slightly above eye level when seated, to avoid glare.
Shade materials and heat tolerance: Paper and fabric shades should never be used with high-wattage incandescent bulbs unless clearances are generous. Glass and metal shades tolerate heat better. When in doubt, always use LED bulbs with any shade material for maximum safety.
