Mowing rate

Mower deck size matters more than horsepower for total mowing time. A 21-inch push mower at 3 mph cuts the same area as a 60-inch zero-turn at 1.05 mph, and most owners run the zero-turn at 6-8 mph. The bigger deck and the higher ground speed compound into 6-10 times the mowing rate of a push mower.

The math.

Area covered per hour = Deck width × Ground speed × Efficiency

Everything comes from one idea: you are painting a stripe as wide as the deck along the ground you travel. Convert the deck width to feet by dividing by 12, multiply by the feet you cover in an hour, and you have square feet.

Acres per hour = deck (in) ÷ 12 × speed (mph) × 5,280 ÷ 43,560 × efficiency

The two constants at the end are the feet in a mile and the square feet in an acre. Collapse them and you get a single factor worth remembering: 5,280 ÷ (12 × 43,560) = 0.0101, so deck inches × mph × 0.0101 is the acres per hour before any efficiency loss. A 42-inch deck at 5 mph is 42 × 5 × 0.0101 = 2.12 acres an hour flat out.

At 80% efficiency, which is a fair figure for a normal suburban lawn:

  • 21 in deck × 3 mph × 0.80 = 0.51 acres/hour
  • 42 in deck × 5 mph × 0.80 = 1.70 acres/hour
  • 60 in deck × 7 mph × 0.80 = 3.39 acres/hour

Watch the direction of that 12. Deck width is in inches and everything else is in feet, so the width is divided by 12. Multiplying instead, which is an easy slip, inflates every answer by a factor of 144.

These are mowing speeds. Actual transit speeds when not cutting can be 50-100% higher.

Efficiency factor, or why deck width is not the whole story.

Open square lawns can be cut at 90-95% efficiency. Real lawns lose efficiency to:

  • Overlap (5-15%): Each pass overlaps the previous to prevent missed strips
  • Turns (3-10%): Time spent reversing or U-turning at the end of each row
  • Obstacles (5-20%): Trees, beds, driveways, edges all require slower passes or trim mowing
  • Hills (10-25%): Reduced speed on slopes, plus reverse-direction passes

Worked example: should you upgrade?

A homeowner with a 0.75-acre yard currently uses a 21-inch push mower. Mowing time:

  • 21 in × 3 mph × 0.0101 × 75% efficiency = 0.48 acres/hour
  • 0.75 / 0.48 = 1.57 hours per mow, so about an hour and 35 minutes

Upgrading to a 42-inch riding tractor:

  • 42 in × 5 mph × 0.0101 × 80% efficiency = 1.70 acres/hour
  • 0.75 / 1.70 = 0.44 hours per mow, so about 27 minutes

That saves a little over an hour per mow. At roughly 30 mows in a northern season it is around 34 hours a year, which is a week of evenings. Whether that justifies the machine is a question about what your Saturday morning is worth, and only you can price that.

Stripe quality vs cutting speed.

Faster mowing speeds reduce stripe quality. Above about 5 mph on a residential mower, grass gets discharged unevenly and stripes become uneven. Commercial operators slow to 4 mph for final-pass quality work, especially on golf courses and high-end residential.

Discharge vs mulch vs bag.

Deck design affects effective cutting width:

  • Side discharge is fastest but throws grass into uncut areas, slowing the next pass slightly
  • Mulching chops grass finer but reduces forward speed by 10-20% (more cutting power per blade rev)
  • Bagging has the most uniform finish but stops every 10-15 minutes to empty

A mulching deck running at 5 mph effectively covers a bit less than the simple formula suggests.

Sharp blades matter more than fancy deck features.

A dull blade at 50% sharpness wastes 5-10% of cutting capacity. The mower slows, the cut is rough, and the grass tears rather than cuts. A 10-minute blade sharpen every 25 hours of mowing pays back in time and lawn quality more than upgrading deck size.

Cost considerations.

The prices below are rough US figures for the mid-2020s and move with region, brand and year, so treat them as a shape rather than a quote. The right-hand column divides the mid-range price by the acres per hour that deck and its usual speed actually deliver at 80% efficiency.

Capacity gets more expensive as you go up, not cheaper. You are not buying speed at that end, you are buying durability, a warranty that survives commercial hours, and a machine that will still be running in ten years. For a homeowner mowing 30 times a season, the cheapest machine that finishes the lawn is usually the right one.

A note on electric mowers.

Electric mowers reduce noise, eliminate engine maintenance, and have improved enough by 2026 to handle small commercial work. Battery runtime is the limiting factor, and most 56-volt electric mowers handle 0.5-1 acre per charge, which is fine for residential but not for landscapers running 6+ hours of cutting per day.
