Germination Information

Seed germination time varies by vegetable type and soil temperature. Understanding these times helps gardeners plan planting schedules and troubleshoot poor germination.

Key factors affecting germination:

  • Soil temperature is the most important factor. Seeds germinate fastest in their optimal temperature range.
  • Moisture must be consistent but not waterlogged. Seeds need to absorb water to trigger germination.
  • Seed depth should generally be 2-3 times the seed diameter.
  • Seed age affects viability. Most vegetable seeds remain viable for 2-5 years if stored in a cool, dry place.

Temperature categories: These describe frost tolerance and when in the year the crop belongs, not only germination temperature. That is why onions and sweetcorn share a 65-75F germination band but sit in different categories: the onion shrugs off a late frost and the corn does not.

  • Cool-season crops (lettuce, peas, spinach, radish, brassicas, roots): Tolerate light frost. Sow early.
  • Warm-season crops (tomatoes, squash, beans, corn): Need warm soil and no frost risk.
  • Hot-season crops (eggplant, peppers, melons, watermelon): The slowest and fussiest. Below about 60F they will simply sit in the ground.

How the temperature estimate above works

Seeds do not count days, they count accumulated warmth above a base temperature below which nothing happens at all. That gives a simple model: multiply the days at the optimal temperature by the optimal range’s warmth above base, and you have a heat budget the seed has to fill. Cooler soil fills it more slowly.

Two things this model deliberately will not do. It does not keep speeding up above the optimal range, because past the top of the band germination slows again and some seeds go dormant outright. And it does not give a number within a few degrees of the base temperature, because the honest answer there is that the seed rots before it sprouts.

The heat budget is why a seedling heat mat is such good value indoors. Warm-season seed at 60F in a cold spring room versus 75F on a mat is the difference between three weeks and one.

Troubleshooting slow germination:

  • If soil is too cold, seeds may rot before germinating. Use a soil thermometer to check actual temperature.
  • If seeds are old, test germination rate by placing 10 seeds in a damp paper towel in a plastic bag. Count how many sprout in a week.
  • Crusted soil surface can prevent seedlings from emerging. Keep soil surface lightly moist and loose.

Practical tip: A seedling heat mat placed under trays can raise soil temperature by 10-20F (5-11C) above ambient room temperature, which dramatically speeds up germination for warm-season crops started indoors.
