Towing capacity is the maximum weight a vehicle can safely tow. Exceeding it causes brake failure, frame stress, transmission overheating, and loss of steering control. Always calculate the full loaded trailer weight, not just the empty trailer.
The Formula:
Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) must be ≤ Vehicle’s rated towing capacity
Tongue Weight = GTW × 10–15% (must be within vehicle’s tongue weight rating)
Key Definitions:
- GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): Maximum weight of the vehicle itself, fully loaded
- GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating): Maximum weight of vehicle + trailer + all cargo and passengers
- Tongue weight: The downward force the hitch ball bears (typically 10–15% of GTW)
- Payload: How much the truck bed + cab can carry (directly affects available towing)
What this calculator checks: payload first, then the tow rating.
A trailer’s tongue weight (10-15% of the loaded trailer) presses down on the hitch and counts against your truck’s payload, right alongside passengers and cargo. Run out of payload and you are overloaded even if the trailer sits comfortably under the tow rating. That is the limit most people hit first, and almost nobody checks it. This tool works from the door-sticker GVWR:
Remaining payload = GVWR − Curb weight − Passengers − Cargo
Worked Example:
A half-ton pickup with a 7,000 lb GVWR and a 5,000 lb curb weight, carrying 2 people at 200 lb each and 200 lb of tools in the bed.
Remaining payload = 7,000 − 5,000 − 400 − 200 = 1,400 lb
Now hitch a 6,000 lb loaded trailer. At a normal 12% the tongue puts 720 lb on the ball, which leaves 680 lb of payload. That is fine.
Now take the same truck to the 12,000 lb trailer its brochure says it can tow. Tongue weight becomes 1,440 lb against 1,400 lb of payload. The truck is bang on its tow rating and 40 lb over its GVWR at the same moment, and the door sticker is the one that counts. The tow rating was never the binding constraint.
Safety Margins by Use:

Most towing guides settle on 80% as the sensible everyday ceiling, and that is the figure the boat and horse-trailer calculators on this site use. The 85% row is for a light trailer on a flat road on a mild day, not for a summer holiday over a mountain pass.
Practical Tips:
- A weight distribution hitch is the usual recommendation once the loaded trailer passes about 50% of the tow vehicle’s weight, or once tongue weight exceeds what the receiver is rated to carry without one
- Trailer brakes are required by state law, not federal law, and the threshold varies: many states start at 3,000 lb gross trailer weight, some as low as 1,500 lb. Check your own state before you tow
- Downshift on long descents and let the engine brake. A loaded trailer pushes the vehicle, and brake fade on a long grade is how people run out of road
