Transmission fluid is to the gearbox what engine oil is to the engine.
It lubricates moving parts, cools the transmission, and in an automatic it is also the hydraulic fluid that makes the gear changes happen.
Neglecting it is one of the most common and most expensive maintenance mistakes vehicle owners make, because the failure it causes is not a repair. It is a replacement gearbox.

Why Transmission Fluid Degrades

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) operates under intense heat and pressure. Over time, the fluid breaks down and loses its ability to:

  • Lubricate gears and bearings effectively
  • Dissipate heat
  • Maintain the correct viscosity for smooth shifting
  • Protect metal surfaces from wear and corrosion

Dark brown or black fluid with a burnt smell indicates fluid that is severely degraded and may have already caused damage.

Each figure is the middle of the range manufacturers publish for that transmission type. Our transmission fluid calculator, which asks for odometer readings rather than distance since the last change, runs on this same table, so the two pages give the same answer for the same car.

Severe duty is roughly half of normal, but not exactly, because the published severe-duty ranges are their own thing rather than a formula applied to the normal ones. A conventional automatic drops from 80,000 to 45,000, which is 56%.

About “lifetime” fluid

It is a warranty-period claim, not a mechanical one. The lifetime in question is the design life of the warranty, and plenty of “sealed for life” boxes are on their second owner by the time they fail. The fluid still oxidizes, still shears, and still fills with clutch material. The option is included here at 100,000 miles because that is where independent transmission shops tend to land for these units, and because doing nothing at all is worse advice than doing something the manufacturer did not ask for.

Severe Duty Conditions

Use the severe column if your driving includes:

  • Frequent towing or hauling heavy loads
  • Mountain driving (transmission works harder on steep grades)
  • Frequent stop-and-go city traffic
  • Hot climate (sustained ambient temperature above 35°C / 95°F)
  • Performance or enthusiast driving

Flush vs. Drain and Fill

A transmission drain and fill replaces 40 to 60% of the fluid. A full flush replaces nearly all of it using a machine.

For a vehicle with very old or severely degraded fluid, a full flush can sometimes cause seals to leak, because the old deposits were masking wear that was already there. This is where the “never change the fluid on a high-mileage box” folklore comes from, and it is half right. The flush did not wear the seals out. It removed the sludge that was standing in for them.

The safer path on a neglected transmission is a drain and fill, then another one a few thousand kilometers later, and a third after that. Three partial changes get you most of the way to fresh fluid without the pressure a machine puts through the circuit. Consult a mechanic about the best approach for your specific vehicle.
