Regular fluid changes are one of the most important (and most overlooked) maintenance tasks for extending transmission life.

Signs of Bad Transmission Fluid:

• Color: Dark brown or black (should be red or amber when new)
• Smell: Burnt odor
• Consistency: Gritty particles or metal shavings
• Symptoms: Delayed or rough shifting, slipping gears, whining or humming noises

“Lifetime” Fluid Myth: Some manufacturers claim their transmissions are filled with “lifetime” fluid that never needs changing. Most independent mechanics strongly disagree. The lifetime in question is the design life of the warranty, not the life of the vehicle, and plenty of “sealed for life” boxes are on their second owner by the time they fail. The fluid still oxidizes, still shears, and still fills with clutch material. Changing it at 80,000 to 100,000 miles can add years to a transmission that costs thousands to replace. Important Warning: Always use the correct fluid type specified by your vehicle manufacturer. Using the wrong fluid can damage seals, cause shifting problems, and void your warranty. Check your owner’s manual or the dipstick for the specification.
