Estimated Server Income

Server tip income calculation helps food service workers understand their annual earnings potential, track weekly income, and evaluate which shifts or venues are most profitable.

The core formulas:

Shift Income = (Hourly Wage × Shift Hours) + Tips per Shift

Weekly Income = Shift Income × Shifts per Week

Annual Income = Weekly Income × 52

Effective Hourly Rate = Shift Income ÷ Shift Hours

If you track sales rather than tips, work out your tips per shift first: Tips per Shift = Table Sales × Average Tip Percentage. That is the number to type into the tips field.

What each variable means:

  • Total Table Sales: the dollar amount of food and drinks served across all your tables in a shift
  • Average Tip Percentage: the US dining average is 18 to 20%, and fine dining runs 20 to 22%
  • Hourly Wage: the tipped minimum wage, which varies by state and goes as low as $2.13 an hour federally in the US
  • Effective Hourly Rate: what you actually earn per hour once wages and tips are added together

Worked example: A server works 5 shifts per week. Average table sales per shift: $900. Average tip rate: 19%.

Tips per shift = $900 × 0.19 = $171 Weekly tips = $171 × 5 = $855 Annual tips = $855 × 52 = $44,460/year in tips alone

With a $3.00/hour wage on 6-hour shifts: Hourly wage income = $3 × 6 = $18/shift Effective hourly rate = ($18 + $171) / 6 = $31.50/hour

Benchmarks by venue type:

  • Fast casual (counter tips): $8–$15/hour effective
  • Casual dining: $15–$25/hour effective
  • Upscale casual: $25–$40/hour effective
  • Fine dining: $40–$80/hour effective

Tip income swings week to week, so track it weekly. That tells you which shifts are worth fighting for, and it lets you budget against your worst weeks rather than your best ones.
