Flooring an attic turns dead overhead space into storage, and it is one of the cheapest square-footage gains in a house.
Two things decide whether it is a good idea: how much sheet material it takes, and whether the joists already up there can carry what you are about to put on them.
Attic Joist Load Capacity
This is the part that gets skipped. Attic joists in most houses were sized to hold up a ceiling, not to hold up you and forty boxes. Typical design live loads are 10 to 20 lbs per square foot (psf) for a storage-only attic. Turning the space into a room means 40 psf, and that is a different structure.
Common joist sizes and capacities (approximate, at 16 inch spacing):
- 2×6: about 10 to 15 psf live load, light storage only
- 2×8: about 20 to 30 psf, medium storage
- 2×10: about 30 to 40 psf, heavier loads
Those figures assume a reasonable span and sound lumber. If the joists are 2×4, or spaced 24 inches apart, or the span is long, the number drops fast. Get a structural engineer to look at it before you load an attic you are unsure about, because the failure mode here is the ceiling coming down on the room below.
A worked example. A 20 × 15 ft attic is 300 sq ft. At ¾" plywood that is 300 ÷ 32 = 9.4 sheets, and 10.3 with the 10% waste factor, so 11 sheets. The plywood itself weighs about 2.2 psf, so it eats a fifth of a 2×6’s 10 psf allowance before you put a single box on it. That is the calculation nobody does.
Choosing the Right Material
Plywood (¾ inch, 23/32 or 19/32 for lighter loads): The gold standard for attic floors. Stronger, stiffer, and more moisture resistant than OSB. Ideal for long-term storage.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board): Less expensive than plywood. Adequate for light storage but more susceptible to moisture damage. Avoid in poorly ventilated attics.
Attic Flooring Decking Panels: Precut panels (often 4×2 ft) designed specifically for attic flooring, with built-in legs to sit above insulation. Easy to install; no cutting required.
Calculating Material Quantity
A standard sheet of plywood or OSB is 4 feet × 8 feet = 32 square feet.
Sheets Needed = Total Area (sq ft) ÷ 32, rounded up + 10% waste factor.
In metric: 1220mm × 2440mm sheets = approximately 2.97 m². Sheets = Total Area (m²) ÷ 2.97, rounded up + 10%.
