Caulk is the cheapest material on any job site and the one that most often decides whether the work lasts. It puts a flexible airtight or watertight seal into a gap that would otherwise move and open up. Knowing the tube count before you start saves the trip back to the store halfway through a bathroom.
How caulk coverage is calculated: Coverage comes from the cross-section of the joint. Treat the caulk as filling the gap, so the volume per unit length is width times depth:
Volume = Width × Depth × Length
A standard tube holds about 300 ml (10.1 fl oz), and roughly 280 ml of that is usable once you allow for what dries in the nozzle and what the plunger never reaches. Divide 280 ml by the joint cross-section and you have the coverage per tube, which is exactly what the table below and this calculator do.

Notice how fast that falls away. Going from a 6mm joint to a 12mm joint does not cost you twice as much caulk, it costs you four times as much, because both the width and the depth grow.
Why the depth column matters: The depths above are not arbitrary. The rule sealant manufacturers publish is that a joint should be about half as deep as it is wide, with a floor of 6mm and a ceiling of 12mm on anything structural. A bead deeper than that cannot stretch: it is bonded on three sides, so when the joint moves the caulk tears instead of flexing.
For anything over 10mm wide, push a backer rod into the gap first. That is the foam rope sold in coils next to the caulk. It sets the depth, stops the caulk bonding to the back of the joint, and cuts the amount of sealant you need at the same time. Buy rod about 25% larger than the gap so it stays put under compression.
Types of caulk and their uses:
- Silicone: bathrooms, kitchens, around fixtures. Waterproof, stays flexible for years. Cannot be painted, and cleanup is unpleasant.
- Acrylic / latex: interior gaps, trim, baseboards, door casings. Paints well and cleans up with water.
- Polyurethane: exterior, concrete, wood, anything that takes abuse. Very durable and paintable.
- Fireblock caulk: required by code around pipes and wires passing through a fire-rated wall or floor. It is orange or red on purpose so an inspector can see it.
Application tips:
- Cut the nozzle at 45° and start small. You can always cut it bigger.
- One smooth continuous stroke beats three careful ones, every time.
- Tool it with a wet finger or a caulk tool straight away, before a skin forms.
- Silicone needs 24 to 48 hours for a full cure. Acrylic takes paint in 1 to 2 hours.
Buy 10 to 15 percent over the calculated figure. No tube empties completely, and the spare costs less than the trip.
