Deck Joist Spacing Calculator

Deck joists are the horizontal framing members that support the decking boards. Correct joist spacing is critical for structural integrity, code compliance, and preventing deck flex or bounce underfoot.

Standard joist spacing options:

• 12 inches (305 mm) on-center (OC): very stiff, required for exotic hardwoods and composite decking with long spans
• 16 inches (406 mm) OC: the most common spacing, suitable for most decking materials
• 24 inches (610 mm) OC: acceptable for thicker (2-inch) pressure-treated decking only

The formula for number of joists: Number of Joists = Ceiling(Deck Width ÷ Spacing) + 1

The “+1” is the fence-post rule: there is a joist at both ends of the run, not just at every interval between. The ceiling matters just as much, because 16 inches on center is a maximum, not a target. A 15 ft deck at 16 inches comes to 11.25 bays. Round down to 11 and every bay opens to 16.4 inches, which is over the decking’s rating. Round up to 12 bays, 13 joists, and they close to 15 inches.

On top of that count come the two rim joists that run perpendicular and close off the joist ends, so total members = joists + 2.

• 2×6 ≈ 38×140 mm
• 2×8 ≈ 38×184 mm
• 2×10 ≈ 38×235 mm
• 2×12 ≈ 38×286 mm

Double joists: At butt joints in decking and at high-load areas (around stairs, hot tubs, or heavy planters), always double the joist or add blocking for additional support.

Blocking: Add blocking (perpendicular bridging between joists) every 8 feet (2.4 m) along the span to prevent joist rotation (twisting) and improve lateral rigidity.

Pressure treatment: All deck joists must be pressure-treated lumber rated for ground-contact (UC4B or UC4C in North America) when used near or in contact with soil, or rated UC3B when elevated and protected from direct soil contact.
