How Many Drywall Screws Do You Need?
Proper screw spacing is essential for a solid drywall installation. Too few screws and panels can sag or pop. Too many is wasteful and time-consuming.
Standard Screw Spacing Rules
Building codes and manufacturer guidelines generally specify:
- Field screws (middle of the panel): every 12 inches (300 mm) along each stud
- Edge screws (along panel edges): every 8 inches (200 mm) along each stud
The standard stud spacing is 16 inches (400 mm) on center in residential construction, though 24-inch (600 mm) spacing is used in some commercial and open-web applications.
Screw Count Per Sheet
For a standard 4×8 ft (1.2×2.4 m) drywall sheet with 16-inch stud spacing:

Why every source quotes a different number
You will see anything from 28 to 39 screws a sheet, and the disagreement is almost entirely about the edges. The field spacing barely moves the total; the edge rule moves it a lot, because the two edge studs carry more screws each than any field stud does.

That last row is the code maximum for screws on walls with 16-inch framing, which is where the widely quoted “about 30 a sheet” comes from. The first row is what a careful installer does on a ceiling or on anything that will be skim coated. For wood framing, use coarse thread screws. For metal framing, use fine thread screws.
Typical Quantity Estimates (Per Sheet)
At 8-inch edges and 12-inch field spacing:
- 16" stud spacing = 39 screws/sheet (7 studs: two edge, five field)
- 24" stud spacing = 29 screws/sheet (5 studs: two edge, three field)
A 1-5/8 inch #6 drywall screw runs about 200 to the pound, so 39 screws a sheet works out near a fifth of a pound per sheet. A 5 lb box covers roughly 25 sheets before waste.
Always buy 10–15% extra to account for misses, dropped screws, and repairs. The number below carries 10%.

Nothing above changes for a ceiling, because the geometry does not. What changes is the spec: ceilings are hung to 12-inch field spacing rather than 16, since the panel is holding its own weight all day rather than leaning on the framing.
