Drywall Screw Count and Box Calculator
Estimate drywall screws for walls and ceilings from sheet count and stud spacing, with a 15% buffer and the box sizes that cover it.
Drywall screw spacing follows building codes and manufacturer recommendations. Proper fastening prevents nail pops, sagging, and loose panels.
Standard screw spacing:
- Walls: Every 16 inches (40 cm) along studs, and 8 inches (20 cm) along edges
- Ceilings: Every 12 inches (30 cm) along joists, and 8 inches (20 cm) along edges
Screws per sheet (4×8 ft / 1.2×2.4 m), hung horizontally:
- Wall with 16-inch stud spacing: approximately 28–34 screws
- Ceiling with 16-inch joist spacing: approximately 36–40 screws
- Wall with 24-inch stud spacing: approximately 22–26 screws
The formula:
A 4×8 sheet hung horizontally is 96 inches across and 48 inches tall, so it crosses several studs and the screws run down each one.
- Studs the sheet crosses: 96 in / stud spacing + 1. At 16 inches that is 7 studs; at 24 inches, 5.
- Screws down each stud: 48 in / screw spacing + 1.
- The two studs at the sheet’s vertical edges get the tighter edge spacing; the rest get the field spacing.
- Total per sheet = (2 × edge screws) + (remaining studs × field screws).
Do not add a separate ring of perimeter screws on top of that. The screws along the vertical edges are the edge screws, and counting them twice is how estimates end up near 60 a sheet, roughly double what anyone actually drives.
Screw types and sizes:
- 1-1/4 inch (32 mm): Standard for 1/2-inch drywall on wood studs
- 1-5/8 inch (41 mm): For 5/8-inch drywall or double-layer applications
- Fine thread: For metal studs (grip better in thin metal)
- Coarse thread: For wood studs (standard choice)
Box sizes:
- Small box: 100 screws
- Medium box: 200 screws
- Bulk box: 1,000 screws (best value for large projects)
Tip: Buy 15% more screws than calculated. Dropped screws, misdrives, and stripped heads mean you will always use more than the exact count.
Screws are cheap. Stopping a hang halfway through to drive to the store is not.
Why the sibling page gives a bigger number. The drywall screw spacing calculator runs the same geometry, but it hands you the two spacings instead of picking them, and it defaults to 12-inch field spacing where this page uses 16 on walls. On 20 wall sheets at 16-inch framing that is 34 screws a sheet here against 39 there, before either buffer.
Neither is wrong. Sixteen inches is the code maximum for screws on walls and what most hangers actually drive; twelve is what a careful install or a skim-coated wall gets. Set that page’s field spacing to 16 and the two agree exactly, per sheet. The totals still differ a little, because this page buffers 15% and that one 10%.
