Concrete Needed

Concrete steps must satisfy both safety codes and structural requirements. Rise and run dimensions are regulated by building codes to ensure safe, comfortable climbing for all users.

Key definitions:

  • Rise = vertical height of each step (recommended: 6–7.5 inches, code caps it at 7.75)
  • Run = horizontal depth of each step / tread (recommended: 10–12 inches, code floor is 10)
  • Total Rise = total vertical height to climb

Number of steps: Number of Steps = Total Rise (inches) / Rise per Step (inches)

Round to the nearest whole number, then recalculate rise per step: Actual Rise = Total Rise / Number of Steps

Concrete volume (a solid poured staircase): Poured steps are a solid mass, so each lower step carries every step above it and holds more concrete than the one above. The total is not one box times the step count, it is a stack that grows step by step: Volume = Rise × Run × Width × (1 + 2 + ... + N) The (1 + 2 + … + N) part equals N × (N + 1) / 2. Keep all three dimensions in the same unit and the answer comes out in that unit cubed, then divide by 46,656 for cubic yards if you worked in inches, or by 27 if you worked in feet.

Worked example (every dimension in inches, which is what the calculator wants): Total rise: 42 inches | Rise per step: 7 inches | Step width: 48 inches (4 feet) | Step run: 11 inches

  • Number of steps: 42 / 7 = 6 steps
  • One-step box: 48 × 11 × 7 = 3,696 cubic inches, which is 2.14 cu ft
  • Stacked total: 3,696 × (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6) = 3,696 × 21 = 77,616 cubic inches
  • That is 44.9 cu ft, or 1.66 cubic yards, and 1.83 cubic yards once you add 10%

Note the width: type 48, not 4. Every field on this calculator is inches on the imperial setting, including the one people naturally think of in feet.

IRC (International Residential Code) requirements:

  • Maximum rise: 7.75 inches
  • Minimum tread depth (run): 10 inches
  • Minimum width: 36 inches
  • Rise and run consistent throughout. More than 3/8" of variation between any two steps is a code violation, and it is also the difference people actually trip on.

Some jurisdictions allow a taller rise on exterior steps that are not part of a required exit. Check locally before you build to the looser number, because the inspector’s copy of the code is the one that counts. The staircase and stair stringer calculators use the same 7.75 and 10 inch limits.

Concrete mix for steps: Use a minimum of 4,000 PSI mix (higher than typical slabs) to handle foot traffic, freeze-thaw cycles, and edge wear. Add air entrainment in freeze-prone climates.
