Standard Sod Roll Sizes In the United States, the most common sod roll is 16 inches wide by 24 inches long, covering 2.67 square feet (0.25 sq m). Some suppliers sell larger rolls: 2 ft x 5 ft (10 sq ft) or big rolls (42 inches x 108 ft) for large commercial jobs. A standard pallet contains 450 sq ft (about 168 small rolls or 45 large rolls).
How Much Sod to Buy Measure your lawn area (length x width for rectangles, or break irregular shapes into rectangles). Always add 5-10% extra for waste, cutting around edges, curved areas, and irregularities. Tight curves and many obstacles require more waste allowance (10%+). Simple rectangular areas need less (5%).
Cost Estimates Sod prices vary by grass type and region. Common ranges: Kentucky Bluegrass: $0.30-0.60/sq ft. Bermuda grass: $0.25-0.50/sq ft. Zoysia: $0.40-0.65/sq ft. Fescue blends: $0.30-0.55/sq ft. A pallet (450 sq ft) typically costs $150-300. Professional installation adds $0.50-1.50/sq ft for soil prep, delivery, and laying.
Installation Tips Prepare soil to a depth of 4-6 inches, adding topsoil or compost as needed. Lay sod within 24 hours of delivery, because it is a living product and a pallet left standing in July will cook from the inside. Stagger seams like brickwork. Water immediately and heavily: new sod needs about an inch of water a day for the first two weeks. Avoid walking on it for 2-3 weeks while the roots take.
Ordering by pallet almost always means over-buying. A pallet is 450 sq ft and does not come in halves, so a 1,600 sq ft lawn takes four pallets and 200 sq ft of surplus. That is normal and worth planning for rather than being surprised by: the extra patches the awkward corners, and a supplier will often sell the balance loose if you ask. The calculator shows the surplus so you can decide whether to size the order down.
