TV viewing distance by screen size calculates the optimal distance between your seating and the television for the best picture quality, based on screen size and display resolution.
Core formulas:
For 1080p (Full HD) displays: Optimal Distance (inches) = Screen Size (inches) × 1.5 to 2.5
For 4K (Ultra HD) displays: Optimal Distance (inches) = Screen Size (inches) × 1.0 to 1.5
For 8K displays: Optimal Distance (inches) = Screen Size (inches) × 0.75 to 1.0
Why resolution changes the formula:
At 4K resolution the pixel density is 4× that of 1080p, so you can sit closer without seeing individual pixels.
The limit is the eye itself. A person with good vision resolves detail down to about 1 arc minute, and the distance at which a screen’s pixels shrink below that is the closest it is worth sitting. On a denser panel that distance is shorter, which is the whole reason the 4K multipliers below are smaller than the 1080p ones.

Worked example: Living room sofa is 10 feet (120 inches) from the TV wall. For 1080p: Ideal size = 120 ÷ 2.0 = 60 inches (55–65 inch range works) For 4K: Ideal size = 120 ÷ 1.25 = 96 inches, though that is a wall rather than a television. 75 to 85 inches is the practical answer for most living rooms.
Viewing angle recommendation: The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends a 30-degree horizontal viewing angle as the minimum for an immersive experience. THX recommends 36 to 40 degrees.
Work it out for a real case and the numbers are less generous than people expect. A 65-inch 16:9 screen is 56.6 inches wide, not 65: the 65 is the diagonal. At 9 feet (108 inches) the angle is 2 × arctan(28.3 ÷ 108) = 29.4 degrees, which is a shade under the SMPTE minimum, not comfortably inside it. To hit the THX 35 degrees with that same 65-inch set you need to be at about 7.5 feet.
This is why viewing-angle guidance and pixel-density guidance pull in opposite directions, and why the 4K numbers above sit closer than the 1080p ones. Resolution tells you how close you can sit before pixels show. Viewing angle tells you how close you should sit to fill enough of your vision to feel like cinema. On a 4K set those two finally overlap, which they never did on 1080p.
Screen height: the center of the screen should sit at seated eye level, which for most sofas puts it 42 to 48 inches from the floor. Above a fireplace is higher than that and it is why those installations are uncomfortable to watch for a whole film.
