The question is never what streaming costs. It is which of them you are still paying for out of habit.

Cost per Hour Formula:

Cost per Hour = Monthly Subscription Cost / Hours Watched per Month

Cost per Title Formula:

Cost per Title = Monthly Cost / Titles Watched per Month

Worked example: Netflix Standard: $15.49/month Viewing: 45 hours/month, 6 titles/month

Cost per hour: $15.49 / 45 = $0.34/hour Cost per title: $15.49 / 6 = $2.58/title

A cinema ticket at $14 to $18 for a two-hour film is $7 to $9 an hour. Streaming beats that by a wide margin, but only while you are actually watching. A service you open twice a year costs more per hour than the cinema does.
Ticket prices vary enormously by city and country, so the last box asks for yours. Whatever you put there becomes the yardstick the verdict is measured against, rather than an American average standing in for everybody.

Break-even viewership (when streaming stops being worth it): If your threshold for “reasonable entertainment value” is $3/hour: Minimum hours needed = Monthly cost / $3 threshold Netflix at $15.49: 15.49 / 3 = 5.2 hours/month minimum

Multi-service annual audit:

Hulu here costs $9 an hour, which is cinema pricing for a sofa, while Netflix costs 52 cents. Cancelling the Hulu line saves $215.88 a year and loses two hours of viewing a month. That is the calculation, and it is almost never close once you write it down.

The rotation method

Subscribe to one service for two or three months, watch what you wanted, cancel, move to the next. Four or five services cycled through a year cost about what keeping two running permanently does.

It works because streaming catalogues are not events. Almost nothing on them expires, so there is no cost to watching a series three months late, and the pressure to keep everything active is manufactured. The friction is real but small: you re-enter a password once a quarter.

Two things that quietly raise the bill

Prices rise without asking you. Most services now have an ad-supported tier priced at roughly what the whole service used to cost, and the ad-free tier has moved up to fill the gap above it. Nobody sends a letter about this.

And annual plans are usually 15 to 25% cheaper than monthly, which is a genuine saving on the one or two services you know you will keep, and a trap on the ones you would otherwise have cancelled in March.
