This calculator recommends the correct umbrella canopy diameter for the number of people sharing it, working from how much floor each person occupies and how much of a circular canopy is genuinely dry.

Each person needs a circle, not a slot

An adult standing under an umbrella occupies roughly 0.60 m (23.6 in) across, shoulder to shoulder with a little room to move. The mistake in most umbrella-size advice is to multiply that by the number of people, as though everyone lines up in a row. Nobody does. Three people under one umbrella stand in a triangle, four in a diamond, and packing circles inside a circle is far more efficient than lining them up.

The packing ratios are known exactly:

Note how little changes between two people and three. Going from one to two doubles the width you need. Going from two to three adds under 8%, because the third person tucks into the space the first two were already leaving empty.

Then the dry-zone correction

The rim of a canopy is not dry. Rain almost never falls vertically, the umbrella tilts into the wind, and the outer few inches shed water onto whatever is under them. So the usable radius is smaller than the canopy radius:

Effective Radius = Canopy Radius × 0.75

Required canopy diameter = Group width ÷ 0.75

Worked example: a couple sharing an umbrella

• Group width for 2 people: 2.00 × 0.60 = 1.20 m
• Required canopy diameter = 1.20 ÷ 0.75 = 1.60 m → 63 inches

That is a golf umbrella, and it is why couples sharing a 48-inch “standard” umbrella both arrive with a wet shoulder.

Reference Sizes:

• Compact (travel): 38–42 in: 1 person, light rain
• Standard: 43–48 in: 1 person, moderate rain
• Large: 50–56 in: 1 person in wind, or 2 at a squeeze
• Golf: 58–68 in: 2–3 people, heavy rain
• Oversized/beach: 72+ in: 4 or more, and really a standing-still umbrella

One person is a special case. The geometry says a single adult needs only about 32 inches, and no such umbrella is sold. The smallest thing on the shelf is a 38-inch compact, and that is not manufacturers being generous: the extra covers the bag on your shoulder, the tilt into the wind, and the fact that you are walking rather than standing still. Treat 38 inches as the floor whatever the arithmetic says.

Wind rating matters too. Look for umbrellas rated to 30–40 mph for storm conditions. Vented double-canopy models survive gusts that invert a single-layer umbrella, and the vent costs almost nothing in coverage.
