WiFi Speed Calculator

The WiFi speed calculator estimates how much internet bandwidth your household needs based on the number of devices and how they are used simultaneously.

The formula:

Total Speed Needed = (Sum of All Simultaneous Activity Bandwidth) × 1.25

The 1.25 multiplier adds a 25% overhead buffer to account for WiFi signal loss, network congestion, and protocol overhead. Real-world WiFi speeds are always lower than the advertised plan speed.

Bandwidth requirements per activity:

The calculator uses exactly these numbers. HD is 5 Mbps and 4K is 25, which is why they get separate fields: one 4K stream costs as much as five HD ones, and it is usually the single biggest line in a household’s total.

Practical example: A household with 8 devices, 2 people streaming HD video, 1 gamer, and 1 person working from home needs: (8 × 2) + (2 × 5) + (1 × 10) + (1 × 10) = 46 Mbps. With the 25% buffer: 46 × 1.25 = 57.5 Mbps, so 58 Mbps. A 100 Mbps plan covers it with room to spare. Swap those two HD streams for 4K and the same household needs (8 × 2) + (2 × 25) + 10 + 10 = 86 Mbps raw, or 108 Mbps buffered, which pushes it into the next plan tier.

Tips: Focus on simultaneous peak usage, not total devices. Most devices are idle most of the time. Upload speed matters too, especially for video calls and working from home, and cable plans often give you only a tenth of your download speed going the other way. If your router is old (Wi-Fi 4 or earlier), upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 can significantly improve performance with many devices. A wired Ethernet connection for gaming and work computers removes Wi-Fi overhead entirely.
