Carbon Footprint Estimator

Personal carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions generated directly and indirectly by an individual’s activities, expressed in metric tons of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) per year. “CO₂ equivalent” (CO₂e) accounts for other greenhouse gases (methane, nitrous oxide) by converting them to the warming impact of CO₂ over 100 years.

Total footprint formula: Total CO₂e = Driving + Flights + Diet + Home Electricity

Four inputs is deliberately fewer than a full audit uses, but these four are where most of a household footprint sits, and they are the four you can actually look up without hunting for receipts.

The grid factor is the one worth checking for yourself, because it varies more than anything else on the list. Switching to a renewable tariff can wipe out the entire electricity line without changing a single habit, which is why it is usually the cheapest tonne anyone ever saves.

Worked example. A household that drives 15,000 km a year, takes two return flights, eats meat at seven meals a week, and uses 900 kWh a month:

• Driving: 15,000 × 0.21 = 3,150 kg = 3.15 t
• Flights: 2 × 1.02 = 2.04 t
• Diet: 7 × 3.3 × 52 = 1,201 kg = 1.20 t
• Electricity: 900 × 12 × 0.42 = 4,536 kg = 4.54 t

Total: 10.9 t, comfortably below the US average of 14.5 and comfortably above the world average of 4.7.

Look at where it actually sits. Electricity is the biggest single line, bigger than the driving, and it is also the easiest to move: a renewable tariff takes 4.5 tonnes off without changing anything about how the household lives. Cutting the same amount out of the driving would mean giving up two thirds of the mileage.

Why “equivalent” matters. Different greenhouse gases trap heat at very different rates over 100 years. Each kilogram of methane (CH₄) does roughly 25× the warming of a kilogram of CO₂; nitrous oxide (N₂O) does about 298×. The CO₂e number rolls those weightings in, so a small methane leak from a gas stove or a farm can dwarf a much larger CO₂ figure from electricity.

A note on offsets. Buying carbon offsets, whether tree-planting credits or renewable-energy certificates, pays someone else to reduce emissions on your behalf. They aren’t worthless, but they also don’t erase what you emitted. Most climate frameworks treat genuine reductions (drive less, fly less, switch heating) as a different category from offsets, and view offsets as a last resort for emissions you can’t eliminate yet.
