The dishwasher vs hand-washing debate has a clear answer backed by data: modern dishwashers use significantly less water and energy than hand-washing the same load, provided the dishwasher is full when run.

Those figures are why the phrase “hand-washing” on its own means nothing. A running tap and a pair of filled basins are two completely different appliances that happen to share a sink, and the gap between them is wider than the gap between a new dishwasher and an old one. Where the hand-washing energy comes from:

Almost none of it is the washing. It is heating the water, and that is straight physics:

BTU = gallons × 8.33 lb/gal × temperature rise (°F) kWh = BTU ÷ 3,412 ÷ water heater efficiency

Heating 15 gallons by 50°F, which is roughly cold tap to comfortably hot, comes to 15 × 8.33 × 50 = 6,248 BTU, or about 1.9 kWh through a 95% efficient electric water heater. That single number is usually what decides the comparison, and it is the one people leave out when they insist hand-washing is cheaper. A dishwasher heats far less water because it recirculates the same few gallons instead of letting them run down the drain.

The condition that decides it:

The dishwasher wins when it is run full. Per item, a half-empty dishwasher is worse than a careful hand-wash in two basins, and no eco cycle fixes that. Running the eco setting rather than the hot cycle cuts energy by 20 to 30%, so it is worth the extra hour if the dishes are not needed back immediately.

Environmental note: a full dishwasher cycle works out around 0.7 kg of CO₂, efficient hand-washing about 0.8 kg, and hand-washing under a running tap roughly 2.0 kg. Those follow the energy figures, so whichever option wins on your electricity bill wins on carbon too.
