Most people picture a shower’s cost as the water going down the drain. It is not. Heating that water costs roughly three times what the water itself does, and that ratio is the whole reason this page is worth a minute.
The arithmetic
A gallon of water weighs 8.33 lb, and raising one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit takes one BTU. So:
BTU = gallons × 8.33 × ΔT kWh = BTU ÷ 3,412 ÷ heater efficiency
Which collapses to 0.00244 kWh per gallon per °F before efficiency. That constant is the one to remember, and it is roughly three times larger than people expect, which is why shower energy costs are routinely underestimated.
What each variable means:
- Flow rate, gallons per minute. A standard showerhead is 2.5 GPM, a WaterSense low-flow head 1.5 to 2.0, and older unrestricted heads up to 3.5.
- Duration. The US average is about 8 minutes.
- ΔT, the temperature rise. Incoming mains water is around 55°F and a comfortable shower is around 105°F, so 50°F is typical. This swings seasonally: winter mains can arrive at 40°F and summer at 70°F, which changes the energy bill by a third either way.
- Water rate, around $0.006 per gallon in the US, or $6 per thousand gallons, though water and sewer together often push the effective rate above $0.01.
- Energy rate. US electricity averages around $0.16/kWh; natural gas is priced per therm, typically $1.20 to $2.00.
Worked example: An 8-minute shower, 2.0 GPM head, ΔT of 50°F, electric heater at 95% efficiency.
Water used = 2.0 × 8 = 16 gallons Water cost = 16 × $0.006 = $0.10 Energy = 16 × 8.33 × 50 = 6,664 BTU, which is 6,664 ÷ 3,412 ÷ 0.95 = 2.06 kWh Energy cost = 2.06 × $0.16 = $0.33 Per shower = $0.42, of which more than three quarters is heat rather than water.
One person showering daily: $155 a year. A family of four: over $600.
The energy is the bill, not the water. That is the useful insight here, and it points at what actually saves money: a shorter shower or a lower-flow head cuts both, while turning the temperature down cuts only the larger half. Going from 8 minutes at 2.5 GPM to 6 minutes at 1.75 GPM roughly halves the total.
