Snow Removal Estimate

Snow removal estimation begins with calculating the volume of snow that must be moved, then converting that to time and effort based on your equipment and the snow’s density.

Volume formula:

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

Imperial: length and width in feet, depth in inches → divide depth by 12 for feet → result in cubic feet Metric: all dimensions in meters or centimeters → result in cubic meters or liters

Snow weight by type, and this is the term that matters most:

The same driveway under the same depth can be a twenty-minute job or a two-hour one depending on what fell. Wet snow is six to eight times heavier than dry powder, volume for volume.

A single shovel load of wet snow (4" deep, 18"×12" scoop) weighs approximately 15–20 lbs (7–9 kg). A 30-minute shoveling session in wet snow is comparable in exertion to a moderate cardio workout.

Worked example: Double driveway (500 sq ft) with 8 inches of wet snow, by hand:

  • Volume = 500 × (8/12) = 333 cubic feet
  • At 25 lbs/ft³, that is 8,325 lbs (3,776 kg) of snow to lift and throw
  • Time, from the table above: 5 × 20 minutes × (8/6) = about 2 hours 15 minutes

Four tons of snow, over two hours, in the cold. That is the number worth sitting with before you start, and it is why the safety note below is not boilerplate.

Safety, and this one is real

Snow shovelling sends thousands of people to hospital every winter, and heart attacks during and just after shovelling are a genuine, well-documented seasonal pattern. Three things stack up at once: heavy lifting with the arms above the heart, which raises blood pressure sharply; cold air, which constricts blood vessels; and people doing a hard workout they have not done since last winter, usually before breakfast.

  • Take a break every 10 to 15 minutes, whether or not you feel you need one.
  • Push the snow rather than lifting it wherever the ground allows.
  • Lift with your legs, small loads, and never twist to throw.
  • Go out earlier and more often. Clearing 3 inches twice beats clearing 6 inches once, and it is less than half the work because you are not lifting as high.
  • Stop immediately for chest tightness, pain down an arm or jaw, unusual breathlessness or light-headedness. Those are not signs to push through.

If you are over 55, sedentary, or have any heart history, this is a job to hire out or to do with a snow blower. It is the one chore where the calculator’s answer, four tons, ought to change the decision.
