Taxi / Ride Fare Estimator

Taxi and rideshare fares have a consistent structure once you understand their components: a base fare, a per-mile or per-km rate, a per-minute waiting/slow traffic rate, and various surcharges. Estimating the fare before you get in helps you budget and avoid surprises.

Formula: Estimated Fare = Base Fare + (Distance × Per-Mile Rate) + (Time × Per-Minute Rate) + Surcharges

For rideshare with surge pricing: Surge Fare = Standard Fare × Surge Multiplier

What each variable means:

• Base Fare: the flat fee charged when you enter the vehicle (covers the cost of the driver arriving and dispatching). Typically $2–$5.
• Per-Mile Rate: charged for distance traveled. Varies widely by city and service level.
• Per-Minute Rate: charged when speed drops below ~10–12 mph (traffic, waiting at lights). Prevents drivers from being penalized for slow traffic.
• Surcharges: airport fees ($2–$8), tolls, fuel surcharges, late-night fees, booking fees.
• Surge Multiplier: 1.2×–4×+ during peak demand (rush hour, rain, events, holidays).

Worked example: Taxi in a mid-size U.S. city, 7-mile trip, 22 minutes:

Base fare: $3.50 Distance: 7 × $2.20 = $15.40 Time: 22 × $0.45 = $9.90 Airport surcharge: $4.00 Total before tip: $32.80 With 20% tip: $39.36

Typical per-mile rates (U.S., 2024):

• Standard taxi: $2.00–$3.00/mile
• Uber/Lyft standard: $1.20–$2.50/mile
• Uber Black/Lyft Lux: $3.00–$5.00/mile
• Airport zones: often have flat-rate options (check in advance: frequently cheaper)

Check both apps every time. The same trip at the same moment routinely differs by 20 to 40% between services, because their surge algorithms respond to different driver pools.
