Dehumidifier sizing is measured in pints of moisture removed per 24 hours. Choosing the wrong size means your unit either runs constantly and fails early (undersized) or short-cycles and never properly dries the air (oversized).
How the sizing works:
Sizing is done on floor area, not room volume. Ceiling height barely moves the answer, because the moisture load comes from the ground, the walls and the air exchanged with the rest of the house, not from the cubic feet sitting above your head.
The method is a base capacity for the first 500 square feet, plus a fixed addition for every extra 500:
Pints/Day = Base + (Area ÷ 500 − 1) × Addition

Worked example: Basement 30 ft × 20 ft = 600 sq ft, very damp. Pints/day = 12 + (600 ÷ 500 − 1) × 5 = 12 + 0.2 × 5 = 13 pints/day Nearest standard size up: a 20-pint unit
A word on why that number looks small. The Department of Energy changed how dehumidifier capacity is measured in 2019, testing at 65°F instead of 80°F. The same physical machine that was sold as a 50-pint unit before the change is labelled about 30 pints now. Nothing got worse; the label got honest. If you are working from an older chart or a neighbour’s advice, you will be told to buy roughly double what you need. Sizes on the shelf today are 20, 22, 30, 35, 40, 50 and 70 pints.
Adjustment factors:
These sit on top of the base figure and the calculator now applies them, because a laundry room and a spare basement of the same size and dampness are not the same job.
- High humidity climate: add 10%
- Space used as laundry room: add 7 pints/day (the middle of the usual 5 to 10)
- People sleeping in the space: add 2.5 pints per person per night
A washing machine and a dryer vented into the room can add more than the dampness rating does. Two people sleeping in a basement bedroom add five pints between them, which on a small room is half the base figure again.
Practical tips:
- Run in continuous drain mode when you can. Emptying a bucket by hand is the step everybody stops doing by week three
- Optimal target humidity is 45–55% RH for comfort and mold prevention
- Below 60°F most compressor dehumidifiers lose efficiency, so pick a unit rated for low temperatures if your basement gets cold
