Tablecloth Size Needed

Tablecloth sizing is determined by the table dimensions plus the desired overhang (drop) on all sides. Getting this right is the difference between an elegant setting and a cloth that either bunches on the floor or barely covers the edges.

Tablecloth size formula: Cloth Length = Table Length + (2 × Drop) Cloth Width = Table Width + (2 × Drop)

For round tables: Cloth Diameter = Table Diameter + (2 × Drop)

Standard drop lengths by occasion:

Occasion Drop Length
Casual dining / everyday 6–8 inches (15–20 cm)
Formal dining 10–12 inches (25–30 cm)
Buffet / display table 15–18 inches (38–45 cm)
Full floor-length (elegant events) 28–30 inches (71–76 cm)

Worked example, rectangular table: Table 72 inches long by 36 wide, with a 10-inch drop for a formal dinner. Cloth Length = 72 + (2 × 10) = 92 inches Cloth Width = 36 + (2 × 10) = 56 inches

Nothing is sold at 92 × 56. The nearest standard cloth is 60 × 102, which gives a 12-inch drop on the sides and 15 on the ends: slightly longer than asked for, and nobody will measure it.

That is the normal outcome. Ready-made sizes are coarse, so treat the calculated figure as the minimum the cloth must reach and take the next size up. An inch or two of extra drop is invisible; an inch short is not.

Common table sizes reference:

  • 4-person dining table: typically 36 × 48 inches
  • 6-person dining table: typically 36 × 72 inches
  • 8-person dining table: typically 42 × 96 inches
  • 60-inch round: seats 6–8 people

Fabric shrinkage tip: Pre-wash cotton and linen before you measure. They shrink 3 to 5% on the first wash, which on a 90-inch cloth is up to four and a half inches. Always buy slightly larger than calculated to account for shrinkage.
