Accent Wall Paint Calculator

Painting an accent wall uses the same coverage math as full-room painting, applied to a single wall. The key is calculating the paintable surface area and accounting for doors, windows, and the number of coats needed.

The formula: Wall Area = Width × Height Paintable Area = Wall Area − Door Areas − Window Areas Gallons Needed = (Paintable Area × Number of Coats) / Coverage per Gallon

Standard paint coverage: the calculator defaults to 350 sq ft per gallon per coat, which is the realistic figure for smooth drywall. Cans usually claim 400. Rough or porous walls, the brick or board-and-batten kind that people pick for an accent wall in the first place, drop to 250 to 300, so change the coverage box when that is what you are painting.

Standard dimensions for subtracting:

• Standard door: ~20 sq ft (3 ft × 6.7 ft)
• Standard window: ~15 sq ft (3 ft × 5 ft)

Worked example: Accent wall is 14 ft wide × 9 ft tall = 126 sq ft. One window: 15 sq ft Paintable area = 126 − 15 = 111 sq ft Two coats needed (dark color over light): Total coverage needed = 111 × 2 = 222 sq ft Gallons needed = 222 ÷ 350 = 0.63 gallons, so buy 3 quarts (0.75 gallons). A single gallon works too and often costs about the same, which is worth checking at the register.

Practical tips:

• Always apply 2 coats when covering a drastically different color or using deep, saturated colors
• Prime first over a dark wall or new drywall, and count that as one of your coats
• Buy 10 to 15% extra for touch-ups and second-coat variations
• 1 quart covers roughly 87 sq ft, a quarter of the gallon figure
• That 87 sq ft is coverage, not wall. At two coats a quart does about 40 sq ft of actual wall, so single-quart accent walls are smaller than most people assume

One thing this calculator deliberately does not do: work out the paint for the other three walls. Accent walls get a different color, a different sheen, and often a different finish quality, so the two quantities are separate shopping decisions.
