How Global Tipping Works

Tipping norms vary dramatically by country and service type. What is expected and appreciated in the United States can be considered rude or unnecessary in Japan, and legally prohibited in some countries’ service contracts.

Basic tip calculation formula:

Tip Amount = Bill Total × Tip Percentage Total to Pay = Bill Total × (1 + Tip Percentage)

Quick tip calculation trick:

For a 20% tip: move the decimal left one place (10%) and double it.

• Bill: $67.50 → 10% = $6.75 → 20% = $13.50

When a service charge is already included:

Check for “service charge,” “service compris,” or “servizio incluso” on the bill. If already included (usually 10–15%), an additional tip is optional for exceptional service only. This is the single most common way travelers double-tip, and in the UK and much of southern Europe it is on the bill more often than not.

A word on the amounts here. The calculator works in whatever currency your bill is in, because a percentage does not care. It deliberately does not print a dollar sign: if you are reading a bill in yen or dirhams, a “$” beside the answer would be actively misleading.

Tax-inclusive tipping (USA):

Tipping on the pre-tax total is technically correct but uncommon. Most Americans tip on the final total including tax. On a $100 pre-tax bill with $8 of tax, tipping on $108 at 20% costs you $1.60 more than tipping on $100. Nobody will notice either way, which is roughly the point.
