Healthy Weight Range

This runs the standard BMI formula backwards. Instead of asking what your BMI is, it asks what weights would put you inside a given BMI band, which turns one number into a target range.

Standard BMI Formula:

BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)²

In US units: BMI = (Weight (lbs) × 703) / Height (inches)²

Healthy Weight Range Calculation:

Rearranged for weight, with the healthy band running from 18.5 up to 25:

Min Healthy Weight = 18.5 × Height (m)² Max Healthy Weight = 25 × Height (m)²

A note on 24.9 versus 25

Nearly every chart writes the healthy band as “18.5 to 24.9”, and plenty of calculators take that literally and multiply by 24.9. That is a rounding artifact, not a threshold. The bands are half-open: healthy runs from 18.5 up to but not including 25, and 24.9 is simply what you get writing the top of that interval to one decimal place. Using 24.9 shaves roughly a third of a kilogram off the top of the range for an average adult, which is enough to tell someone they are above their healthy weight when the category ladder on the very same site calls them healthy. This calculator uses 25, matching the main BMI calculator.

Worked Example, person 5 feet 9 inches tall (69 inches = 175.3 cm = 1.7526 m):

  • Height²: 1.7526² = 3.0716 m²
  • Min healthy weight: 18.5 × 3.0716 = 56.8 kg (125.3 lbs)
  • Max healthy weight: 25 × 3.0716 = 76.8 kg (169.3 lbs)
  • Healthy range: 125 to 169 lbs

Running the same height through the US formula gets you to the same place: 18.5 × 69² ÷ 703 = 88,078 ÷ 703 = 125.3 lbs, and 25 × 69² ÷ 703 = 119,025 ÷ 703 = 169.3 lbs.

BMI Classification:

BMI Category
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 up to 25 Healthy weight
25 up to 30 Overweight
30 up to 35 Obese Class I
35 up to 40 Obese Class II
40 and above Obese Class III

How wide is the range, really?

Wider than most people expect. At 5 feet 9 inches the healthy band spans 44 pounds, from 125 to 169. That is not a rounding error in the guidelines; it reflects how much frame size, muscle and bone density legitimately vary between two people of the same height. Somebody who lifts and somebody who does not can both sit inside it at weights 30 pounds apart. So treat the top of the range as a boundary worth knowing rather than a goal to approach.

The range also scales with the square of height, which surprises people. Add four inches and the healthy band does not shift by a fixed number of pounds, it stretches: at 5 feet 5 inches it is 111 to 150 lbs, a 39-pound span, while at 6 feet 1 inch it is 140 to 190, a 50-pound span. Tall people get a wider band and short people a narrower one, which is one of the fairer criticisms of BMI.

Important Limitation: BMI does not distinguish between fat mass and muscle mass. Elite athletes often register as “overweight” by BMI despite having low body fat. Body composition methods (DEXA scan, hydrostatic weighing) give a more accurate assessment. BMI is best used as a population-level screening tool, not a definitive individual health metric.
