Compression Stocking Size Calculator

Find your compression stocking size from ankle and calf circumference in cm or inches, with US mmHg levels and the European and UK class numbers.

Stocking Size

Compression stockings apply graduated pressure to the legs, tightest at the ankle and decreasing toward the knee or thigh.
This assists blood flow back toward the heart and reduces swelling, fatigue, and the risk of clotting.

Getting the right size is critical.

Too loose: no therapeutic benefit.
Too tight: restricted circulation and discomfort.

Compression levels (measured in mmHg):

  • 8–15 mmHg: Mild compression. Ideal for travel, long periods of standing, general leg fatigue. Available over the counter.
  • 15–20 mmHg: Moderate compression. Recommended for mild varicose veins, pregnancy-related swelling, tired or achy legs. Over the counter.
  • 20–30 mmHg: Firm (medical grade). Used for DVT prevention, post-surgical recovery, moderate varicose veins, lymphedema management. Many shops sell it over the counter, but it is the level to ask a doctor about first.
  • 30–40 mmHg: Extra firm. Usually prescribed. For severe venous insufficiency, post-thrombotic syndrome. Best fitted by a professional.

Those are the American ranges. Europe and the UK sell by class instead, and the classes do not line up with each other. The German RAL standard has class 1 at 18 to 21 mmHg, class 2 at 23 to 32 and class 3 at 34 to 46. The British standard, BS 6612, has class 1 at 14 to 17, class 2 at 18 to 24 and class 3 at 25 to 35. So a “class 2” stocking from a German maker is firmer than a British class 2, and a box that says only “class 2” is worth checking for the mmHg figure.

Key measurement points:

  • Ankle circumference: measured at the narrowest point just above the ankle bone. This is the primary sizing measurement.
  • Calf circumference: measured at the widest point of the calf.
  • Thigh circumference: only needed for thigh-high or pantyhose style stockings. This calculator sizes knee-highs, so it does not ask for it.
  • Length: for knee-highs, brands fit length by the distance from the floor to the bend of the knee, not by your height. Height is only a rough guide to it.

Typical sizing guide (ankle measurement):

  • Small: 18–22 cm
  • Medium: 22–26 cm
  • Large: 26–30 cm
  • XL: 30–35 cm
  • XXL: 35+ cm

Note: sizing varies between brands. Always check the brand’s specific sizing chart.

Important: Always consult a healthcare provider before using medical-grade (20+ mmHg) compression stockings, particularly if you have arterial disease, diabetes, or open wounds on the legs.
