Sobriety Time

How Sobriety Is Calculated Sobriety time is the total number of days elapsed from your quit date to today. The calculation is straightforward but meaningful. Every single day counts.

The Calculation Total Days = Today’s Date − Quit Date

From the total days, we derive:

  • Years = floor(days / 365.25)
  • Remaining months = floor((days − years × 365.25) / 30.44)
  • Remaining days = days − years × 365.25 − months × 30.44

Each line subtracts what the ones above it already accounted for, which is the part people get wrong. Take 400 days: one year, then 35 days left over, then one month, then five days. Write the last line as a plain remainder of 30.44 instead and you get four days, because that version has forgotten the year.

The 365.25 and 30.44 averages account for leap years and varying month lengths, giving a more accurate breakdown over long periods.

The day count itself is done on calendar dates in UTC rather than by subtracting two timestamps. That sounds fussy, and it matters: subtract local midnights across a daylight-saving change and you are an hour short, which rounds down to a day short. A counter that quietly takes a day off you twice a year is not much of a counter.

Standard Sobriety Milestones Recovery communities widely recognize certain milestones as meaningful markers of progress:

  • 24 hours: Often the hardest first step
  • 30 days (1 month): The brain begins to rebalance
  • 90 days (3 months): A major psychological threshold
  • 6 months: Neural pathways are reshaping
  • 1 year: A landmark achievement, widely celebrated
  • 2 years: Relapse risk drops significantly
  • 5 years: Long-term recovery established
  • 10 years, 20 years, 25 years: Lifetime milestones

Why Milestones Matter Research in addiction medicine shows that recognizing milestones reinforces positive behavior through a sense of achievement and community recognition. Each milestone reached is a genuine accomplishment, and the calculator simply helps you see how close the next one is.

A Note on This Tool This calculator is a supportive counting tool only. It does not provide medical advice, treatment recommendations, or substitute for professional support. Recovery is a deeply personal journey.

If you want the money and the health timeline instead This page counts time, for alcohol, tobacco or drugs alike, and puts a calendar date on each milestone ahead of you. It asks for nothing but a date.
The sobriety tracker is the alcohol-specific one. Give it what you used to spend a week and how much you drank a day and it works out the money saved, the drinks not taken, and the calories avoided, against a documented recovery timeline from 12 hours to 10 years. Same clean date, same day count, different question.
