VO2 Max Calculator

VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during intense exercise. It’s the gold standard measure of cardiovascular fitness, expressed in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min).
The Cooper 12-Minute Run Formula (field test):
VO2 max = (Distance in meters − 504.9) / 44.73
Run as far as you can in exactly 12 minutes, on a track if you can find one. It is a brutal test and it is also the most reproducible field test there is, which is why armies still use it sixty years after Kenneth Cooper published it in 1968.
Worked Example (Cooper Test):
A runner covers 2,800 meters in 12 minutes:
VO2 max = (2,800 − 504.9) / 44.73 = 2,295.1 / 44.73 = 51.3 mL/kg/min
The race method, and the step almost everyone skips
If you have a recent race result you do not need to run a fresh test. Jack Daniels’ VDOT method starts with the oxygen cost of running at a given speed v in meters per minute:
VO2 = −4.60 + 0.182258v + 0.000104v²
That number is not your VO2 max. It is what that pace costs you, and you can only hold a fraction of your maximum for the length of a race. The second half of the method is that fraction:

with t the race time in minutes. Divide the first by the second and you have VO2 max.
Skipping the division is the most common mistake in online VO2 calculators, and it is not a rounding error. A 3-hour marathon holds about 82% of maximum, so the raw oxygen cost reads 43.8 while the true figure is 53.5. That is the difference between “average” and “excellent” for a 40-year-old man.
Fitness Classification
The classification below comes from the Cooper Institute norms, and it depends on age as much as on sex. The same 40 mL/kg/min is Fair for a man of 25 and Excellent for a man of 65. Any single table presented as “the” VO2 max scale is quietly assuming an age.

Women’s absolute values run 10 to 15% below men’s at the same fitness level, mostly from differences in hemoglobin concentration and lean mass, which is why the two tables are separate rather than one table with a footnote.
Practical Tips:
- Elite male endurance athletes often exceed 70–80 mL/kg/min; Kipchoge tested at ~92
- VO2 max can improve 15–20% with consistent aerobic training over 3–6 months
- High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is the most efficient method for raising VO2 max
- Track it every 8–12 weeks to measure fitness gains
Why this matters beyond fitness. Cardiorespiratory fitness as measured by VO2 max is one of the strongest independent predictors of all-cause mortality in long-term cohort studies. Moving from the “low” to the “above average” category carries roughly a 30-45% reduction in cardiovascular mortality risk, an effect size comparable to quitting smoking. The mechanism is broad: better oxygen delivery and extraction lifts every organ system that depends on aerobic metabolism, which is essentially all of them. For most adults, raising VO2 max is the single most impactful lifestyle intervention available.
