Immigration application fee estimation calculates the total government filing fees required for various US immigration processes. USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) charges fees for each form and benefit type, and many processes require multiple forms filed simultaneously.
Total immigration cost formula: Total Application Cost = Σ Form Filing Fees + Biometrics Fee + Medical Exam + Attorney Fee + Document Translation + Other Costs
Where:
- Form Filing Fees: USCIS fee for each specific form (varies by form type; see table)
- Biometrics Fee: $85 (fingerprinting and photo), charged with most I-485 and naturalization applications
- Medical Exam: required for green card applications; $200–$500 depending on physician and required vaccinations
- Attorney Fee: $1,500–$5,000+ for full representation depending on case complexity
- Document Translation: $50–$200 per document for certified translations
Major USCIS form fees (schedule effective 1 April 2024):
Several forms are cheaper filed online than on paper, so both are shown where they differ.
- I-90 (green card renewal): $465 paper, $415 online
- I-129F (K-1 fiancé visa petition): $675
- I-130 (family petition): $675 paper, $625 online
- I-485 (adjustment of status / green card): $1,440 (age 14–78); $950 (under 14 or over 78)
- I-765 (work authorization EAD): $520 paper, $470 online
- I-131 (advance parole/travel): $630
- I-751 (remove conditions on residence): $750
- I-539 (extend/change nonimmigrant status): $470 paper, $420 online
- N-400 (naturalization): $760 paper, $710 online
The calculator uses the paper figure, which is the higher of the two, so an online filer should come in under its estimate rather than over it.
Worked example: family-based green card (spouse of a US citizen)
| Step | Form | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Petition | I-130 | $675 |
| Adjustment of status | I-485 | $1,440 |
| Biometrics | n/a | $85 |
| Work permit | I-765 | $0 (concurrent with I-485 after 2024 rule) |
| Travel document | I-131 | $0 (concurrent) |
| Medical exam | n/a | $350 (estimated) |
Government fees total: $2,550 Add attorney fees: $2,500–$4,000 Add translations (5–8 docs): $400–$800 Estimated total: $5,450–$7,350. That figure assumes you are already in the US and adjusting status. Applying from abroad means consular processing instead, with its own Department of State fees on top.
Only the USCIS rows are fixed prices. The filing fees come off a published federal schedule, so the calculator knows them. The medical exam and the attorney are market prices that vary by physician, by firm and by city, so the calculator asks you for them instead of guessing. Get a quote before you fill those two boxes: the $350 exam and the $2,500 to $4,000 attorney above are ranges to sanity-check a quote against, not prices you should expect.
