Back-to-school supply budget planning helps families manage one of the largest recurring educational expenses of the year. The National Retail Federation’s annual survey has put average back-to-school spending in the region of $875 to $890 per family with children in kindergarten through 12th grade in recent years. Read that carefully: it is per household, not per child, and a family with three kids in school does not spend triple it. Costs also swing hard on grade level, on what the school’s own supply list demands, and on whether you shop the August sales or the week before term.

The last two columns are the ones people forget when they budget, and between them they add a couple of hundred dollars a child. Those bands are here to sanity-check a figure you have, not to be used as one: the calculator asks for your own five numbers, because school retail moves every August and the same list costs very different amounts in different states.

Leave all five blank and the page still tells you the durable half, which is what your grade level actually needs that the others do not. That list is the same in 2030 as it was in 2020, and it is the one that stops a category being missed entirely.

Savings strategies:

• Shop the sales tax holidays, which about 17 U.S. states run in early August
• Dollar stores for basic consumables (pencils, folders, crayons): saves 40–60%
• Compare supply lists between siblings, because a lot of it carries over from last year
• Buy graphing calculators used ($45–$70) vs. new

Notebooks ×6 ($12), binders ×3 ($15), pencil set ($5), colored pencils ($10), dry erase markers ($8), folders ($6), scientific calculator ($15), glue and scissors ($6), highlighters ($5), index cards ($4), loose-leaf paper ($5), and the tissues and hand sanitizer the classroom asks every family to chip in ($9).

That is $100 of classroom supplies, and it is the only part the school actually hands you on a printed list.

Then come the four lines nobody writes down: backpack and lunch gear at $55, clothes and shoes at $275, a Chromebook or tablet spread over a couple of years at $200, and activity fees, a yearbook and a locker deposit at $75.

Total: $705 for one middle schooler. Put those five figures in and that is what the calculator returns, along with the observation that matters: the printed supply list was 14% of it.
