Water Change Schedule

Aquarium Water Changes are essential for maintaining healthy water quality. The amount and frequency depend on your tank size, stocking level, and filtration.

General guidelines:

  • Most freshwater tanks need 10-25% water changed weekly
  • Heavily stocked tanks may need 25-50% weekly
  • Lightly stocked tanks with heavy filtration can sometimes stretch to biweekly changes

Why water changes matter:

  1. Removes dissolved waste products (nitrates, phosphates)
  2. Replenishes trace minerals and buffers
  3. Dilutes hormones and pheromones that can inhibit fish growth
  4. Maintains stable pH levels

Calculating water volume:

  • Rectangular tank: Length × Width × Height (in inches, divide by 231 for US gallons)
  • Rectangular tank metric: Length × Width × Height (in cm, divide by 1000 for liters)
  • Subtract about 12.5% for substrate, decorations, and equipment displacement, which is what this calculator does and what the volume calculator on this site uses

Nitrate is the number that decides the schedule. Everything else here is a starting guess; your test kit is the actual answer. Nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle and nothing in a normal freshwater tank removes it, so it accumulates until you take water out. Keep it under 20 ppm in freshwater and under 10 in a reef.

A water change dilutes nitrate by exactly the fraction of water you replace. A 25% change on a tank sitting at 40 ppm leaves 30 ppm, not zero. That surprises people, and it is why one big change rarely fixes a neglected tank: you need either several changes or a much larger one.

If nitrate climbs back to where it started within a week, the schedule is not the problem. Feeding is, or stocking is, or the filter needs rinsing in old tank water.

Stocking level guidelines:

  • Light: 1 inch of fish per 2 gallons (1 cm per 2 liters)
  • Moderate: 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon (1 cm per 1 liter)
  • Heavy: more than 1 inch per gallon (overcrowded, and it needs more frequent changes)

Water change volume formula: Change Volume = Tank Volume × Change Percentage

Temperature matching is critical: New water should be within 2°F (1°C) of tank temperature. Always use a water conditioner to neutralize chlorine and chloramine.

Planted tanks may need smaller, more frequent changes (10-15% weekly) to avoid disrupting CO2 and nutrient balance. Saltwater tanks typically need 10-20% changes weekly or biweekly, using pre-mixed saltwater at the correct specific gravity.
