Fish tank water volume and stocking are the two fundamental calculations every aquarium keeper must understand. Volume determines filter size, heater wattage, and chemical dosages. Stocking determines how many fish can thrive without ammonia buildup.
Volume formulas:
- Inches to US gallons: V = Length × Width × Height ÷ 231
- Centimetres to liters: V = Length × Width × Height ÷ 1,000
Actual water volume is 80 to 90% of the geometric figure. Gravel, rock, decorations and the inch or two of headspace below the rim all take their share, and this calculator uses 87.5% for the usable number.
Stocking density: two rules that disagree
The “inch per gallon” rule says max fish length in inches = tank gallons. The surface-area rule says max inches of fish = surface area in square inches ÷ 12, where surface area is length × width.
They give different answers for the same tank, and that is the useful part. A 36 × 18 × 18 tank works out at 44 inches by volume and 54 by surface. A tall hexagon tank of the same volume might come out at 44 and 30. Take the lower of the two, which is what the calculator does, because whichever number is smaller is telling you what the real constraint is.
Why surface area matters: gas exchange happens at the water surface, oxygen in and carbon dioxide out. A tall narrow tank and a wide shallow one can hold identical water and support very different numbers of fish.
Bioload is not the same as inches. A single 12-inch Oscar produces far more waste than twelve 1-inch neon tetras. Large messy fish, goldfish and cichlids especially, need more water and much more filtration than their length suggests.
Filtration: the filter should turn the tank over 4 to 10 times an hour. A 40-gallon tank wants something in the 200 to 400 GPH (gallons per hour) band. Err high; nobody has ever regretted over-filtering a freshwater tank.
Reference: stocking guides by fish type:
- Neon tetras (1.5"): 1" per gallon rule = fine
- Goldfish (6–12"): Need 20 gallons for first fish, 10 gallons per additional
- Betta fish: 5-gallon minimum, solo housing
- Cichlids: 30–55 gallons minimum depending on species; territorial
- Discus: 50+ gallons, sensitive to water quality
Worked example: Rectangular tank: 36" (L) × 18" (W) × 18" (H).
- Volume = 36 × 18 × 18 ÷ 231 = 11,664 ÷ 231 = 50.5 gallons
- Usable water volume ≈ 50.5 × 0.875 = 44.2 gallons
- Surface area = 36 × 18 = 648 sq in → 648 ÷ 12 = 54 inches of fish maximum
- Stocking example: 20 neon tetras (30") + 2 dwarf gourami (4") + 6 corydoras catfish (9") + 1 bristlenose pleco (4") = 47" total, comfortably inside the 54" surface-area limit
