Chinchilla Housing Requirements

Chinchillas are active, agile rodents originally from the Andes mountains of South America. They are exceptional jumpers, capable of leaping over 1.8 m (6 ft) in a single bound. This athleticism means their cage needs both floor space and vertical height.

Minimum Size Standards

Each animal past the second adds another 0.36 m² to the minimum and 0.50 m² to the recommended figure, along with 30 cm of height. Those are the increments the table itself implies between the single and the pair, carried forward rather than guessed at.

In imperial terms the single-chinchilla minimum works out at roughly 24 in × 35 in of floor and 36 in tall. The metric figures are the primary standard here, so the inch measurements are conversions of them rather than round numbers in their own right.

The Importance of Vertical Space

Chinchillas in the wild live on rocky mountain slopes and sleep in crevices. They are highly motivated to jump and climb. A tall cage with multiple ledges, platforms, and ramps enriches their environment enormously.

Space the ledges about 30 cm (12 in) apart vertically, which gives roughly one per 30 cm of cage height. That spacing is not about enrichment, it is about the fall: a chinchilla that misjudges a landing on a bare 120 cm drop can break a leg, and an older or overweight one will. Staggering the ledges so no drop is more than one level also stops the cage becoming a single open shaft.

Essential Cage Elements

Dust Bathing (Unique Requirement)

Chinchillas cannot get wet. Water destroys the density of their ultra-fine fur (80+ hairs per follicle, against 1 to 3 in humans), and a damp coat that close-packed does not dry out, it grows fungus. They clean themselves by rolling in volcanic ash dust for 5–10 minutes, 2–3 times per week. The dust bath house should have enough room to fully roll over.

Social Needs

Chinchillas are highly social and generally do better in pairs or small groups. Same-sex pairs (especially females or neutered males) tend to bond well. Introduce chinchillas on neutral ground and monitor closely for the first several weeks.

Temperature Sensitivity

Chinchillas are prone to heat stroke, so keep the environment below 25°C (77°F). Ideal temperature range is 15–20°C (59–68°F). Never place the cage in direct sunlight or near heating vents.
