Rabbit Hutch Size Calculator

Rabbit Hutch Sizing is based on veterinary guidelines that ensure rabbits have enough space to move, stretch, hop, and stand on their hind legs comfortably.

The General Rule: The minimum hutch size should be at least 4 times the rabbit’s full body length when stretched out. The rabbit should be able to take at least 3 hops in one direction and stand fully upright on its hind legs without its ears touching the ceiling.

Minimum Space Guidelines:

• Small breeds such as the Netherland Dwarf, Polish, at under 4 lbs / 1.8 kg: 12 sq ft (1.1 sq m) minimum, 24 inches (61 cm) tall
• Medium breeds such as the Holland Lop, Mini Rex, at 4 to 8 lbs / 1.8 to 3.6 kg: 16 sq ft (1.5 sq m) minimum, 24 inches (61 cm) tall
• Large breeds such as the Rex, English Lop, at 8 to 12 lbs / 3.6 to 5.4 kg: 24 sq ft (2.2 sq m) minimum, 30 inches (76 cm) tall
• Giant breeds such as the Flemish Giant, Continental Giant, at over 12 lbs / 5.4 kg: 36 sq ft (3.3 sq m) minimum, 36 inches (91 cm) tall

Multiple Rabbits: For each additional rabbit of the same size, add approximately 50% more floor space. Two medium rabbits need at least 24 sq ft (2.2 sq m). Bonded pairs can share space, but they still need room to have personal space from each other when they want it.

Exercise Area: The hutch is just the resting area. Rabbits also need a connected exercise run or daily free-roam time, and this is the part most setups get wrong. A rabbit shut in a hutch all day develops weak bones and a poor gut, both of which are avoidable. The run should be at least twice the hutch floor area: 24 sq ft (2.2 sq m) for a single small rabbit, rising to 72 sq ft (6.7 sq m) for a giant. Combined living and exercise space therefore starts around 36 sq ft (3.3 sq m) for one small rabbit and passes 100 sq ft (9.3 sq m) for a giant. The often-quoted UK welfare figure of a 10 ft by 6 ft area, 60 sq ft, sits right in the middle of that band and is a reasonable target for a bonded pair of medium rabbits.

Height Matters: Rabbits need to stand fully upright on their hind legs. A Flemish Giant can reach 36 inches (91 cm) when standing, so their enclosure must be at least that tall. Shorter enclosures cause spinal problems over time.

Indoor vs Outdoor: Indoor hutches can be slightly smaller if the rabbit gets regular free-roam time in a rabbit-proofed room. Outdoor hutches should be on the larger side and include weatherproofing and predator protection.
