Area Converter

Area measures two-dimensional space, with the square meter (m²) as the SI unit. The “square” is the part that catches people out, because area grows with the square of length, not in step with it.

Key relationships:

• 1 km² = 1,000,000 m²
• 1 ft² = 0.092903 m²
• 1 acre = 4,046.86 m²
• 1 hectare = 10,000 m²
• 1 mi² = 2,589,988 m² = 640 acres = 258.999 hectares

For a sense of scale:

• A tennis court: about 261 m²
• A soccer pitch: about 7,140 m² (1.76 acres)
• An American football field: about 5,350 m² (1.32 acres)

The squaring is genuinely counterintuitive. Double the side of a room and you don’t double the floor, you quadruple it, because both length and width grew. A pizza of twice the diameter holds four times the food. It’s the most common estimating mistake people make with paint, flooring, turf, and tile, and it always errs the same way: you need far more material than a casual guess suggests.

The acre and hectare are the two big land units. A hectare is a clean 10,000 m², a square 100 meters on a side. The acre is the awkward historical one, originally the area a team of oxen could plow in a day, which is why it converts to such an unfriendly number.

The acre does have one tidy relationship, though, and American land records are built on it: a square mile is exactly 640 acres. That is the “section” of the US Public Land Survey grid, and a quarter section is the 160 acres a homesteader was granted. If you have ever wondered why rural American parcels come in 40s, 80s and 160s, that is why. A square mile is 2.59 km², so a hectare and an acre differ by about two and a half times, which is the ratio worth memorizing if you read land listings in both systems.
