Carpet Area Converter
Convert between square feet, square yards, and square meters for flooring and carpet projects.
Calculate material needed for any room.
Enter a room size or an area in any unit. The rest follow, including what a 12-foot roll actually costs you.
1 sq m = 10.764 sq ft = 1.196 sq yd
Standard carpet roll width: 12 ft (3.66 m)
Enter a room size above, or an area in any unit, to see what that means in running feet off a roll.
Understanding Carpet Area Measurements
Carpet and flooring materials are sold using different area units depending on the country and retailer. In the United States, carpet is typically priced per square yard or square foot, while in most other countries, flooring is measured and sold in square meters. Understanding how to convert between these units is essential for accurate cost estimation and ordering the right amount of material.
Conversion Formulas:
- Square feet to square yards:
sq yd = sq ft / 9 - Square yards to square feet:
sq ft = sq yd × 9 - Square feet to square meters:
sq m = sq ft / 10.7639 - Square meters to square feet:
sq ft = sq m × 10.7639 - Square yards to square meters:
sq m = sq yd / 1.19599 - Square meters to square yards:
sq yd = sq m × 1.19599
How to Measure a Room:
For rectangular rooms, simply multiply the length by the width. For irregular rooms, divide the space into rectangular sections, calculate each section separately, and add them together.
Area = Length × Width
When measuring in feet: Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Square feet
Standard Carpet Roll Widths:
| Width | Common Use |
|---|---|
| 12 feet (3.66 m) | Most common residential carpet width |
| 15 feet (4.57 m) | Wide-format for larger rooms |
| 13 feet 6 inches (4.11 m) | Some European manufacturers |
| 6 feet (1.83 m) | Carpet tiles, runners |
Waste Factor:
Always add extra material to account for cutting waste, pattern matching, and seams. The typical waste factors are:
- Simple rectangular rooms: Add 5-10% extra
- Rooms with closets or alcoves: Add 10-15% extra
- Patterned carpet: Add 15-20% extra for pattern matching
- Stairs: Measure each step individually and add 10% waste
Practical Examples:
- A 12 ft × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft, which equals 20 sq yd or 16.72 sq m. With 10% waste, order about 22 sq yd.
- A 4 m × 5 m room is 20 sq m, which equals 215.28 sq ft or 23.92 sq yd.
- A living room measuring 18 ft × 22 ft is 396 sq ft or 44 sq yd. At 25 per square yard in whatever currency you are quoted, the carpet alone comes to 1,100.
Carpet is bought by the running foot, not by the square foot
This is the part that catches people out at the shop counter. Broadloom carpet comes off a roll of fixed width, almost always 12 feet, so what you actually buy is a length cut off that roll. A room 10 feet wide still takes a 12-foot cut, and the 2-foot strip down the side is yours whether you want it or not.
That means the honest number for a rectangular room is not the area at all. It is the room’s longer dimension in running feet, times the full roll width. A 10 by 14 room is 140 square feet on paper and 168 square feet of carpet on the invoice, because 14 running feet of a 12-foot roll is 168. The area calculation understates a narrow room by a lot and a 12-foot-wide room not at all.
Two consequences worth knowing. Rooms wider than 12 feet need a seam, and the seam should run along the length of the room and away from the main sightline as you walk in. And it is often cheaper to accept the offcut than to seam a room to save a strip, because seaming is labour and labour is the expensive part.
Cost Comparison Tips:
- When comparing prices between sq ft and sq yd, remember that 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft. A price of 27 per sq yd equals 3 per sq ft.
- Installation is usually quoted separately and runs roughly 1 to 4 per sq ft, which is 9 to 36 per sq yd. These are approximate US figures and move with the local labour market.
- Carpet padding is sold in the same area units and typically adds 0.50 to 1.00 per sq ft.
